This is why I firmly believe that the "Give stuff away for free + advertising = $$$" model will fail. People need to sell products, for money. That's what I'm going to do with my startup. Consumers will be customers, not the product.

I'm struggling to respond to this post. I've been reading and participating in HN for a couple months now. It's become clear, like in every social group, that HN has a "popular" crowd. It might not necessarily be specific people, but that t

This is why the pervasive ideal company line in Silicon Valley is wrong. The "Lots of Users + ? = $$$". Can you imagine the same being applied to anything else? "Yes, today we'll be pitching a restaurant. We give away food for free! In a co

Let's solve this right here. A new bill: Companies that provide internet service (henceforth ISPs) are forbidden from owning or operating any service that sends or receives traffic over this internet. Furthermore, ISPs are forbidden from in

I like it, but I think a cooler color would be better. However, I like cooler over warmer, and some people are the other way. I think that's just personal preference. Otherwise it seems fresh and clean.

Wow. You can't make this crap up. I love this: "Revenue Integrity Unit". I guess that's politically correct for "How do we screw over customers to make more money?"

In the end AT&T and the other carriers don't want to be "dumb pipes", but that's what consumers want. Can you imagine the same applied to water? "I'm sorry sir, but we know you used an unapproved toilet AND you went over your allotted s

Sure. Not right now, they don't. My point is that if Apple keeps pushing the walls higher on its garden at some point people will start complaining. iOS could very well become the Windows of mobile. I can imagine a future where a lot of peo

This is really going over the line. People are content in the walled garden, but if it starts getting too stuffy in there people will want to leave. Unfortunately it makes "business sense" (read: nonsense) for Apple to raise the walls of th

That's very cute. I like it a lot, good work. Is the info randomized, or do you get the same info every month (i.e. is it always the panama canal or are there other things? Like walk on the moon, or around NYC, etc.)

This brings up an interesting debate. It's very difficult (perhaps impossible) to turn off personal emotions, and we entrust our children to other people to teach them. The emotions, intelligence, and beliefs of our teachers directly affect

My startup just got rejected on Monday as part of the wave of on-time rejections/acceptances, and I can say: Don't worry about it. In fact, don't even think about it. If you get in, that's great, if you don't, that's fine too. Use the time
