Genuine question: what stops you from going out for a walk to have time for yourself? I have been doing it, and I have to say I never thought I would like to just walk around the neighborhood just for the sake of walking.

I don’t get the “build server” example. It is expected that the author works crazy hours and do the extra mile to get the job done… but that same expectation does not apply to the teams/individuals that own/maintain the build serv

Exactly. It’s a subjective topic. When I was younger I used to think in terms of “good code” and “bad code”. Nowadays it’s all about “zero code” and “some code”: the best code is the code that’s never written. I leave style issues, good pra

The problem is not how often disasters happen, the problem (for me) is that they will happen and you will have to fix it. Every minute the servers are down is money the company is losing. Just the mere possibility of that ruins everything.

Personally, I find it very cumbersome. Just look at the very first example they show on their website ( https://swagger.io/docs/specification/basic-structure/ ): it’s not pleasant to work with.

I would say devops is the most stressful role in the tech industry out there. If something goes down on a Sunday morning, you have to fix it; and sometimes the fix is not an as easy as restarting a server.

Anecdote: I bought my MBP 2015 model 15 inch in 2016. It’s my only laptop and still works like the first time (battery cycle: around 600/1000). Zero problems. Still on Catalina, though. I removed like half of the stock software that ca

I’m one of those “All is fine, leave me alone” who is planning to leave the company soon. My reasons: - I take pride on what I do, I really care a lot about my career, but my main motivation for working 9-5 is my paycheck. I want more money

People is giving content for free to Twitter. Should they start charging for it? Twitter is not on the same league as the NYT.

I agree. But sometimes the obvious and simple solution is not the simplest one. Taking your example about the database: if your table is over 70 million rows and you are using Mysql < 5.6, trust me: it’s simpler to add an additional tabl

The trick is to disable all notifications. Always use the phone as a “pull” device. A reply can wait until the next day, and if it’s important they will call you (more than once).

In your example, the moment you move from UK to Cayman Islands, the Spanish government/tax system will know (unless you make sure you hide it... but this is another topic). At some point you won’t be a UK taxpayer, in that moment the S
