I think it's because those who try to do that don't realize the full spectrum of things that Apple does right, seeing only the most superficial fraction of it.

I think Windows 7 is pretty good, but I think the record adoption rate of it has quite a bit to do with how bad Vista was (and its terrible reputation); it created a void that needed to be filled, by anything that wasn't as terrible as Vi

All MacBooks have the same size keyboard. From the 11" MacBook Air to the 17" MacBook Pro. Same size keyboard. The size of the keyboard has never been an issue for me, IMHO it comes down to screen real estate -- which is why my last machine

I think so too. MacRuby is perfect for Apple, as they control its implementation, and the syntax is far more approachable than Objective-C is. Also, no performance penalty when compiled, unless I'm mistaking. Thinking on it, I'd only be sl

I don't see the harm in specializing, really. There are plenty of room, and need, for both generalists and specialists. Being a specialist doesn't mean you are unable to learn new things, or that you are daft. I think what people really mea

Yeah, I exaggerated. But out of $20.34 billion in revenue this quarter, that revenue is still a sliver. That sliver isn't going to lit Steve's eyes up and get him to go all crazy. You don't get Apple levels of success by acting shortsighted

Apple makes money selling hardware. The money they make from iOS developers is a drop in the ocean — the App Store is merely a means to an end; to provide users with lots of great apps, so more people buy Apple hardware.

Well, the post does imply that they've had problems recruiting exactly because they're using PHP. It's no mystery to me either, I imagine it must be hard to find great engineers willing to spend all their days dealing with the idiosyncrasie

For the web development subset of programmers, the Microsoft loathing may be inspired by Microsoft's disdain for web standards. Microsoft are, in a very real and palpable way, making client side web developers' lives a lot harder than they'

Yesterday's Apple event in summary: * Multi-touch gestures via trackpad and mouse. * No touching the screen. * No iOS apps coming to the Mac, instead bringing some ideas and concepts over. * iOS and Mac OS X stay separate, ideas converge. M

Well, many/most pro-lifers aren't pro-life anymore when it comes to the death penalty, or gun-control, or what have you. Then the sanctity of life isn't that uncompromisingly important, anymore.

Every Apple patent doesn't result in a shipped product or feature. This is Apple we're talking about; they love secrecy, don't want nobody to know what they're doing. Some of the patents they've filed are probably just ideas, some of them

Adding multi-touch to the trackpad is one thing, assuming OS X will become touch-oriented is quite another. iOS isn't just about touch, it's first and foremost about direct manipulation — touching the very thing you want to interact with.

Apple created iOS because lightweight devices with a touch screen demand entirely different solutions and paradigms than mouse driven desktop applications do. They're not converging any time soon.

The state of the ruby/rubygems distribution is clearly not viewed as a bug by its maintainers, which is why neither hard work nor a bug report will fix it. Let's give discussion and attention a go.

All I'm saying is that the non-functioning state of ruby/rubygems on debian and/or ubuntu is not news. This is not something that Zed just uncovered that was previously unknown. Everybody in the Ruby community knows this, and has known it

The "bug" in question is not unknown to them. Especially the distribution of Ruby and Rubygems is completely botched. The most common answer in #rubyonrails is probably this: "you've installed ruby/rubygems via apt haven't you? uninstall it
