I took an SSRI for 15 years. It took me multiple tries over a couple years to taper off. It was not a fun experience. When I tried doing it too fast, I would get terrible headaches. The final attempt took 9 months of careful tapering until

The article says he claims he was fired based on his religion, but it doesn't sound like it was related to religion. It just so happened it was a religious holiday. Maybe there is more to the story, but it sounds like he could just as

I admit I felt some disappointment when I reached the end and there was no stats table. That said, I don't regret reading it. It was a well written post. Thank you for writing it.

Don't just watch. Measure. Observers have biases. Figure out what you want to improve, figure out how to tell if you have, test changes against that.

That is awesome. I've been raiding with the same hardcore guild since vanilla. It's amazing how many players are developers, sys admins, infrastructure, and even other professions like doctors and lawyers.

On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins changed the way I see myself and the world in a big way. I don't necessarily see his approach as a pathway to AI (though I don't dismiss it), but I thought it had some easily understandable insight

I've built a number of serverless systems over the past few years on AWS and GCP. None were too extreme, but ranged from moderately complex SPA to silly chat bot. Some saw light, but real, usage. To echo what others have already said:

It seems like we can't even go a week without Facebook getting caught doing something scummy. It makes you wonder what else they are doing. I assume the worst.

At least when you cancel your magazine or newspaper subscription, they don't yank access to all the content you received while you were subscribed. It isn't a new model, but I'm not sure it is a good model. A lot of these sub

You are probably right. It was a small amount. I would be surprised if the charge back approval wasn't completely automated. But at least they side with the consumer some of the time. PayPal was just straight up "nope, we don'

Years ago I used PayPal to pay for an on demand server that was advertised to be ready within an hour. Twenty four hours and zero servers later, I had already gone to a competitor and asked for a refund. The company refused and PayPal sided

As my company has grown (I am an early employee), our on call system has gone through a few changes. A decade ago, we had a physical pager that we handed off every week. The pager was tied to our ticketing system and anyone could create a t

I think it depends a lot on why the operation failed and what you need the client to do next. If it is something the client can fix, I think it is reasonable to respond with the appropriate 4xx series status and enough to detail that they c

Things like fraud detection come to mind. Being able to build a model based on previously detected bad actors and then use that model to detect possible additional bad actors is a specialized but useful skill in some contexts.
