There's another scenario that matters here: an ordinary phishing website. Yes, about 15-20% of users never look at the URL bar and will type their password into any site that looks like the login screen regardless of how obviously bogu

It's tricky. Although this is being justified with references to phishing (which may well be the case) it's also an issue for spambots that need to sign in to a Google account in order to e.g. post spam links to YouTube comments.

Nobody said you can't count those deaths as COVID deaths when they actually were, that's not the argument at all. The argument is that (a) not all excess deaths were caused by COVID, only some and (b) excess deaths are very low co

In Swing, yeah. Swing focuses very much on boring business-type UI. Not in JavaFX where such shaders are pre-canned and there's a CSS dialect too. I wrote my web-like app in JavaFX. It was no big deal.

My point is, I don't see the problems. Anti-aliasing works fine. The text looks good to me, always did. Looking out of place ... well, on macOS at least you can pick a mac-like theme. I don't because I prefer the IntelliJ theme bu

There's always been low hanging fruit. There were video games from the dawn of computing. I played games and did programming, sometimes more gaming, sometimes more coding. My mother worried generically about 'computer time'.

Shading excess deaths isn't weird, that's fine. However it's misleading because they don't compute the reverse integral. This article does: https://www.aier.org/article/swedens-dry-tinder-accounts-fo

Sweden had an unusually low number of excess deaths between Jan 2019 and March 2020, much lower than its neighbours. That's very likely the reason it did "worse" than e.g. Denmark - simply because it did "better" th

The rest of the world was NOT a bloodbath with overflowing hospitals. Look at the UK. Excess death once of the worst in Europe but not actually bad at all, lower than 1999/2000 in fact. Hospitals were ghost towns during these periods,

What's your point? That there was a wave of excess deaths? That happens in most countries in Europe, most years, just due to flu and other winter issues. Not every year: Sweden was running 10% lower excess deaths than the 5 year aver

A bit of context may help. The author of the blog post works for JetBrains (I think). JetBrains are interested in moving away from Swing for their product line. Their intended replacement is a port of JetPack Compose to the desktop, perhaps

JVM apps can start in <100 msec, and IDEA has a 'lite' mode now where it's more like a text editor. That starts very fast. IDEA is slow(ish) to start because it's an IDE so it's loading tons of plugins, a project

Then the FT estimate is wrong, because the actual statistics in "deaths so far this year for Sweden" are what's linked to and you can clearly see that they're currently below prior years, not above. A short wave in April

The post title is not a wild claim, it's a factual claim based on the data so far. Of course Sweden may well have more than the 1000 excess deaths/week needed to catch up with a normal year, we'll have to wait and see. But as

Point is, that even assuming winter deaths, Sweden's excess mortality for the year can't at this point get high enough that it'd have been noticed in any normal year. Normality+some winter deaths does not make for a disaster.
