> On the Internet, we're all psychopaths. That might be the best one-line summary of the problems with social media I've ever seen.

It's a bit of a balancing act. If you're too ban-happy you'll get an echo chamber (some would say that HN already is one) and if anything goes the trolls drive out serious participants. I think it's remarkable that the d

Sounds like choosing the wrong environment for the application. A console terminal is for displaying console text. It needs 8, maybe 16 distinct colors. Some might argue it doesn't need colors at all.

Well, the one time I traveled to Europe with an infant, I brought enough formula along for the duration of the trip. Not so much because I didn't trust what would be available locally, but because I knew there were no issues with the f

I saw "Blown Away Guy" in the thread title and immediately that image came to mind. It was a very popular dorm room poster when I was in college.

"Harsh truths" got us to the point where children don't have to work in mines and mills anymore.

It's just a movie, and it was used as hyperbole to illustrate the point that to an overwhelming degree, what matters is what you do, not (only) how you feel about it. It wasn't an endorsement of bosses being assholes or toxic work

You're assuming that the goal is getting to zero CO2 emission? There is no reality where that is possible. Edit: I hadn't read the article. That indeed seems to be the goal. On that basis, yes the math appears wrong.

Yeah, while there's no "safe" level of lead ingestion, not only do we not use leaded gas in cars, commercial aviation (with very few exceptions) does not use it either, and the private/general aviation piston-engine plan

Android is shipped with a number of apps that cannot be removed (or even disabled). Some are Google's, and some are added by the phone manufacturer (e.g. Samsung) and some are added by the carrier (e.g. AT&T) if you buy the phone f

Yep. Midwest USA here. My thermostat is 78 in the summer AC season, 65 in the winter heating season. I don't bother programming in day/night temps, I tried that once and my utility bills were higher.

Of course EU producers who package food for export label it accordingly. However what Reason seems to be implying is that we just load up some cargo planes with pallets of surplus formula that are apparently not needed in Europe and bring i

Yes, and there is a history of unscrupulous producers putting all kinds of garbage into infant formula. Who is going to complain? Not the babies. That's why it is one of the most regulated food products. It's almost like a pharmac

Does "Europe" have an abundant surplus of infant formula that they are prepared to export? A lot more mothers breast-feed in Europe, formula feeding is rather uncommon so why would one expect that inventory is available to send so

Would refusing to move be cause for termination? That's not a layoff, perhaps, at least in the eyes of the unemployment regulations?

I don't think a 65 miles suborbital flight qualifies as "outer space" but still cool to see.

Yes, and death also enables reproduction without eventual overpopulation. Reproduction leads to mutation, which evolves the species.

Trains do it because they need to apply a lot of torque at zero speed to get moving. The only way to do that with a mechanical connection to a combustion engine is with a clutch, which would burn up from friction before the train got going.

You didn't see much response to COVID? We spent more on COVID relief and response than we spent on WWII. $40B is a rounding error in what we spent on COVID.

Using corn for ethanol fuel is bone-headed. That's among the first things we should quit doing. It's a convoluted subsidy for corn farmers, nothing more. As an energy supply it's net-negative.

Or maybe stop raising animals where they need their food artificially supplied and then growing that food in a desert? There are places where cattle can free-range and graze, and grass can be cut during the summer to feed them in the winter
