Interesting idea. Do you have a mechanism where a moonlighter(?) doesn't get matched in a specific geography, industry or set of companies? Presumably your workers are being employed somewhere and not all employers are friendly towards

We gave people small, test projects to see if they could deliver and communicate effectively (they didn't know it was a test .. we paid them of course). Been having a decent experience on Upwork so far from the hiring side (we started

Obvious in retrospect but a very good suggestion. I mostly go to geeky meetups and usually lament how everyone is the same. When I go to the odd business meetup, I find a very diverse crowd. Finding the right business meetups can be hard th

If you need to make money right away, I strongly suggest you reconsider upwork (don't know the other sites you mentioned). I know a friend who worked on it as a dev. I use it as a client. The money from initial contracts might be bad,

The tool is super useful. However, your search could be bether with respect to geography. Let me explain .. I am in the Bay area, and I'm interested in all local tech conferences. Seems like if I search for SF, I only see conferences i

My last apartment complex, the manager boosted how 2 bedroom apartments (going for like 4K) were being shared by 3 engineers so it wasn't too bad. As an older tech person whose room-mate days are over, this seems exploitative. I do oka

The biggest issue right now is rents. I have 2-3 friends who just signed 1 year leases for north of 3K for 1 bedrooms. My own evil apartment complex (shitty place but Mountain View so what can you do) raised my rent and said I could go back

Your cohort point is particularly insightful. I had just started my career in 1999 .. I had a bad feeling about the situation and went to grad school right away (after a year). Was a good move at the time because a year or two after I start

Loved that story. We can even dream of the ending (with bitcoin, ether and dao's .. haha!). The first version of Glass was utter crap and felt like a waste of money (I'm surprised they didn't get sued by purchasers). I won&#x

Thank you. The OpenGL calls you refer to .. is there a C# binding that is easy to setup with Unity? I tried OpenGL in a computer graphics undergrad course (sadly, one I dropped) and it was a crazy amount of C/C++ libraries and header f

Do you still need a server for signaling or is it actually P2P at that point?

I looked into WebRTC for a few days and had the same issues with the docs you folks mentioned. What is up with that? My sense was that WebRTC is just a repackaging of many existing standards so it isn't a new tech by itself. The challe

Is there a serious MOOC that gets into this? I'd like some academic rigour rather than some kid on YouTube. I tried the Unity route and had issues with shaders. Trying to get into GPU programming.

Disclaimer: this is a throwaway account, and I used to work for IBM. I like Cloudant .. it is not too bad. In a recent project (after I left IBM), I needed to get a data tier up quickly and I actually used it for the initial POC. And yes, i

How many useful die per wafer? Is there a ballpark yield for 14nm? I too suspect this was not a profit-in-the-now division. They were probably playing a long-term game. I think they ceded the game to someone else .. but who?
