You appear to be thoroughly brainwashed. 1. It’s not a “nominal” government, but the actual one. 2. The use of chemical weapons by Syrian government has never been proven. Moreover, it has no incentive whatsoever to use them. 3. Iran is not

Why is it so expensive? Most shots can be filmed in a strip mall.

Sure, but I don’t live in NYC, and traffic is terrible where I live, and it’s not economical to improve it without fast, cheap boring technology. PS; interestingly, Moscow metro has more riders, in spite of a smaller city.

Not at all. We could use some out of the box thinking of Elon’s caliber here on Earth as well. A week ago I was in Moscow. Their subway is truly insane in its scale. It’d be pretty cool if something like this could be built in major US citi

I had employees who would ask to “work from home” and then not actually do much, hoping I won’t notice. But good managers do notice, of course, especially when some of the peers work from home as well and turn in reams of high quality code

His essay about machine translation is quite illustrative of the issues of cultural context as well. Even the best translations lose a substantial chunk of meaning, because it’s often not just what the author said, but also how he said it,

That’s because Russians themselves find it difficult to fully contextualize Dostoevsky. A couple hundred years from now they may not be able to do so at all, and the full depth will become inaccessible to anybody other than historians of th

Please don’t take this as a put down or anything. I’m sure much of the meaning in Indian literature is culturally inaccessible to me as well. The problem is 100% symmetrical, one just needs to be aware of it.

As a manager: some people can work from home, and some just can’t. The problem is, you don’t know which is which when recruiting, and firing someone even remotely in a protected class is a huge hassle. Even so, if I were to start a company

I don’t know man, I was poor myself at one point, and I’ve found Steinbeck’s characters to be very 3D and relatable. Grapes of Wrath is more like an impressionist painting. He doesn’t draw every detail, you’re supposed to transport yourself

As a Russian, I don’t understand how Americans can “get into” Dostoevsky or Tolstoy. The cultural background required to understand them is simply not there, so you’re getting maybe 50% of what’s there, and that’s an optimistic estimate. Li

It means they didn’t have to make any effort whatsoever to get attention and help of their male peers. Interpret this as you wish.

To add to this, the best way I found to improve work life balance is when I arrive at work, I’d set the countdown timer on my phone to 8 hours and 30 minutes (to account for lunch) and when it starts beeping, I get up and leave. In the mid

I think there’s an aspect to this that you did not bring up. Systems like this can be fragile. There’s no way for a human to bail in a socially acceptable manner if conversation ends up in a dead end.

No, creepiness exists in your mind only. Believe it or not, we valued the fact that those women were there and we tried to help them out in whatever way we could. My field of study back then (guidance systems, weapons design) is even more m

The word you’re looking for is “chivalry”. An outmoded concept in these modern times, but alive and well back then.

I just don’t see how that could be. When I was studying, we had 2 girls in a peer group of roughly 90 people. All they had to do to find a lab partner is have a pulse. Interestingly, both have graduated, and neither is using her degree now.

I think the entire benefit of this (assuming there is any) is in setting aside a few minutes per day to fully relax. I’m also pretty sure a power nap would be better, but it’s generally less socially acceptable, especially in a work environ

People commenting on this post, please state if you have kids or not. The reason is, people who don’t have kids tend to be extremely naive about parenting. My take: there’s no such thing as universal “good parenting” advice. Kids are differ
