Not hyperbole-- it's very much in our interest for these guys to sort this out publicly before escalation. It's irresponsible to cause a technical fight on your users machines. Essentially what I said here: http://news.ycombinator.com/item

Yeah, they overreacted. NoScript shouldn't have started out that way. AdBlock Plus shouldn't have forced the issue by making it even more of an "island" war. They should have started with this kind of blog in the first place before escalati

Hacker News Disease? This issue is as old as the oldest of: armchair coaching, backseat driving, parody ballads, cocktail parties, in-laws, or op-ed columns. What he's really saying is that he doesn't like hearing people's opinions when the

I'm not a fan of politics here, but I like seeing the graph there of associations. I'd love to see a full semantic relationship graph with fundraisers, lobbyists, etc.

I don't agree at all with deletionist philosophy. I want that ended myself. But the arguments typically center around the mission of Wikipedia. If the organization has to fund storage, bandwidth, etc, then they'd like it to be worthwhile co

No plan, really. The changes would need to be #ifdef'd or otherwise conditioned-out because almost no one would want them. We optimized it specifically for our own error message searching and that's not really very useful for practical use.

I love sphinx (we use a custom version of it to power http://bug.gd ). Some choice quotes: "25 MySQL Boxes to 10 Sphinx" "50M queries per day w/steady growth" "1,000+ qps during peak w/room to grow" It's great to see it standing-up well, t

This is very useful info-- a weekend or so ago I made an app in this area. With a little marketing I think there are some industries where you could get more sales. You might actually look into making this into a web service where you store

Your article is great advice. As I worded it, I'm providing practical advice to a new web developer. Let me elaborate on my position: First and foremost, don't write the password handling yourself if you can avoid it. If you do it yourself,

I upvoted you because that's a good link and good advice in a sense. I don't agree fully with your exact phrasing and would put it a bit milder for someone asking this kind of question. I'd personally advise: Use a respected library or at

For what it's worth (not much), a few months ago I did my own quick, amateur analysis of the OAuth security. I suspect it's more of the case that it's easy to get stuck looking at the raw protocol itself for vulnerabilities to see how best

In all of the browsers I tried (FF3, IE8, Chrome), the timer gave me 4x slower using the MXHR stream on first try. But when I refreshed it was always wildly faster for the MXHR side (and still substantially faster on cache refresh).
