I can see that, and perhaps my experience has just been unlucky. I missed usenet by a few years.

I’d add arguing by using inline quotes. Example: some snippet of text from parent comment I disagree because x, y, z. another snippet This is wrong because a, b, c. (End example) Doing so obliterates context from a position, especially

I am really impressed that Melissa is not only living in the gray, but defending the wisdom of doing so.

I find myself in a very nuanced place with these sorts of discussions. I don't know what the right answer is. I _don't_ think the right answer is anything goes (even if you attempt to let the community police that with voting). I&

I'm not sure -- I haven't worked long enough at a company where managers had their own office & everyone was in an open office plan. My experience was that everyone, including the CEO, was in an open office (40+ person startup

I think that is a large part of it, I strongly agree. However, I think there are two other factors that come into play that are very tough for people to vocalize when they are defending an open office. 1. Open offices are more appealing vis

I had this same realization. In this context it doesn't work as well, anyway, because senior leaders are in meetings so often that their desk is fairly meaningless. But to generalize at a higher level -- "by what mechanism do we f

So your description of his response really struck a nerve with me. The founder is the leader of the company, not the board, and the founder(s) regularly give up equity in order for a company to be successful. Yes, it might require board app

How's a kid supposed to make money mowing lawns if their parents cannot afford a mower? How are they supposed to do that if they live in the inner city & there are no lawns? What if their neighbors can't afford the service? I&

The alternative is encouraging people to wait for treatment and tests that they can’t afford in the hope that the problem isn’t serious. Put another way, if this family does need the trauma unit for their child next month, will they hesitat

Yep, when fear creeps in around modifying a part of an application it is time to have a very serious conversation about fixing that. It is one of the few cases where I find the refactor vs. creating customer value argument is more clear cut

Honestly, I'd lean towards /r/AMA to get a higher signal-to-noise ratio & limit trolling. The smaller user base means you're more likely to bring genuinely interested parties into the conversation -- people watching

This country's willingness to dump massive entitlements on the coal, etc. industries while simultaneously deriding individual entitlements is the height of hypocrisy. Really makes me wonder what the breaking point is for this particula

In a nutshell, it is more complex & expensive to run a c-corp compared to, for example, a LLC. The way taxes are handled is a meaningful part of the issue.

If Vermont were a company I'd assume a play at cheap advertising: no far-reaching benefit, but a lot more eyeballs researching the state for far less than the cost of running an ad campaign.

The cost to produce quality content is quite high. Even if you are "only" putting together a screencast, the cost of learning that content, planning how to teach it, editing it, and inevitable retakes can all easily stretch to 20x
