Oh, I’m sure base prices would be much, much higher if our bills were reduced when not using the full quota. It’s a shame there’s so little (or no) competition between ISPs in most places. So much inefficiency to be weeded out of the market

Maybe it’s time to create a new HN client with this feature. Ironically, an AI can be of assistance in filtering AI-related submissions or comments.

I mean, on their own, many of the core apps probably don’t bring much revenue to Apple. I can understand their reluctance to allow uninstalling the App Store, but what do they gain by preventing someone from uninstalling the Camera, for ins

I take tools like these as an inspiration. All of us have at least some trivial tasks that can be automated. In the past, automating them might have been a hassle, but with LLMs, that’s no longer the case. I, for one, have a “scripts” folde

Why gate such a basic functionality for users in the European Union? People elsewhere do not have access to alternative app stores anyway. Is allowing them to uninstall such apps too much?

I love the fact that one of the customers used T-Mobile’s own Terms and Conditions to refute the notion that prices could be increased, regardless of the language in the FAQ. As the article reports, this is what the terms valid at the time

OneDrive also promised unlimited storage space for files, and it just lasted a few years. Of course, most “unlimited” things are impractical from a business point of view. But I think the burden of dealing with this should fall on the compa

According to Apple’s website, the hearing protection feature will only work in the U.S. and Canada, but nothing is said about the hearing aid feature. Does this mean that the latter will be available internationally? It would be a game chan

Claiming to have deleted something while just having hidden from public view… that’s basically begging content owners to sue and very easily win damages.

This whole affair has been a disaster for everyone involved. Just a ton of dirty laundry being aired in public… Time is ripe for a new publishing ecosystem — more secure, with less cruft, and preferably better governance. But I imagine Word

That’s news to me, thanks for the information! I’ve considered replacing my Kobo’s battery, but the issue seems firmware-related, so I never thought it was worth the hassle.

I count the physical manipulation of pages as an advantage of dead tree books. E-ink is very nice, but there’s nothing like flipping through actual pages to find some information. Of course, the situation reverses when you’re trying to sear

That happens on sideloaded books that belong to the same device as well, at least on my Kindle Scribe. These books disappear occasionally, and I have not found a consistent way to make them reappear in the UI. Sometimes they return on their

Come to think of it, a foldable Kindle would be very nice! And not just because it has the format of a book. The portability of a Paperwhite combined with the note-taking ability of a Scribe… there’s probably a market for that. Edit: also,

You make an interesting point. Maybe facilitating the usage of sideloaded books is not among Amazon’s priorities. Yet I don’t know how much of that comes from malice rather than simply negligence or lack of interest.

The thing is that the iPad screen truly doesn’t compare to e-ink in reading black-and-white books. If the e-ink screen is made properly, with high resolution and no PWM, one can read for hours on end without eye fatigue. Battery life on e-i

That makes sense. Another comment pointed out that even the resolution of colored content (150 ppi) is half that of black-and-white content (300 ppi). Trying to take notes with bad refresh rates and lower resolution would not make for a goo

Yet Amazon has been consistently increasing the size of the Paperwhite models over time, each one a bit larger than the previous one. They remain portable, but no longer fit into one’s pockets, for instance.

WeChat using a custom protocol like MMTLS instead of sticking with something solid like TLS 1.3 is a risky move. Rolling your own crypto almost always leads to trouble. Of course, there may be ulterior motives behind Tencent’s decision, and

The last Paperwhite model, for example, did not work upside down, just in landscape mode (and even so, only rotated to one direction). I don’t know whether Amazon finally added a gyroscope to the Paperwhite in order to fix this issue.
