Depends. Maybe you should get a bonus if your work really has such an impact. And if you talk managing a team, that's not a developer position, that's a lead position (to me anyway).

Yes, but healthcare is a few 100 bucks a month, which we pay too, only for us it's mandatory by government. Vacation sounds like a real problem, but it seems like you could circumvent that by going freelance and just taking off x days

That's low to you? Wow. Just wow. Over here in Europe (or at least Germany) salaries are incredibly uniform (doesn't really matter if you suck or get as much done in a day as others in 1-2 weeks; if your bugs get constantly reopen

From my experience the problem isn't the existence of bugs (like the existence of gravity), but the widespread occurrence of the cowboy programmer with very limited attention span. Often there are tons of TODO comments left in the code

I use different mechanisms for different reasons. I used to have Flash on click-to-play, but then YouTube feeds me flash videos, so now I've had Flash turned off for a while. I don't really miss it. The reason is that Flash drains

OTOH, Emacs isn't that accessible to many users, and its idiosynchrasies can be very offputting. I also quit Emacs after a while because I wasn't totally happy with it. I think that's why there are so many attempts to built n

I haven't used Emacs in a while, so I'm very rusty, but why would you run a remote Emacs in SSH, and not use your local Emacs to access remote stuff via TRAMP? In my Emacs days, I've never really used the terminal version. Mu

That, and you can actually turn off third-party cookies. There's absolutely NO reason you should have them on, and I've been surfing the web just fine this way for 15 years.

Isn't that what you are for, if you're computer-literate? The first thing I install on my gf's computer or phone is Firefox and configure it to sensible settings (turn off third-party cookies, install ABP and Ghostery and stu

There was a monthly in August something, and I just installed the latest one which is from today. It may not yet be built for all supported devices though.

Are you sure? My Galaxy S 1 (one) still gets updates, as does my S3. They're monthly milestones now. Maybe you need to install CM 11 first, so the system has a base to work with. I think you can see if your phone gets updates if it

The general lack of updates is exactly why I use/install/recommend Firefox. That and the automatic syncing w/ Desktop and the regular performance improvements. (Chrome isn't an option. I can't even turn off third-pa

AFAIK Qt is much more than a GUI framework, and even modular these days, so you could leave out the GUI parts if you want. So you can use all kinds of Qt libs for different things, probably even for building a web server. Whether you WANT t

Thanks a lot for that! In my current project there are quite a few Polish people, so I always thought it would be nice to learn a bit of the language. So far we're only picking up the swearwords, so this may be a good complement.

This is what I think, as well. Car pooling/sharing is supposed to be sharing, i.e. split the cost. If you charge every pessenger individually you're trying to make a profit, not sharing or pooling. Since the government considers t

As a European I'm surprised by the very stark black-white separation in US culture. Why do the two (almost) not mix, even after centuries? During my student year in the US, I was friends with students of all colors - culturally they we

Well, on one point I do agree: you should have your life/finances sorted out (meaning: positive cash flow, enough to raise kids) before you have kids. Everything else is just irresponsible. Generally, it's a personal decision. How

While most of US population growth is AFAIK due to immigration, and traditional WASP families have a rather low growth these days, that used to be different, due to cultural differences. Germany has been low pop-growth for a long time now (
