You can look at it as too much for anyone's needs, or you can see it as enabling tomorrow's applications. Looking back, or looking forward. Back in the dialup days, nobody in their right mind would run a torrent, or play online sh

Algorithms? Netflix hasn't done actual recommendation algorithms since the DVD days. These days it just relentlessly pushes its own third-rate content to viewers, presumably because it's cheaper than licensed content.

It's a shame that there's barely even a conversation about fixing the problem of the ever growing pile of proprietary firmware blobs; more and more often people seem to just accept the situation. There isn't AFAIK an organisa

IMHO the solution to retaining control of an app that wants to sprawl out is to set up the dev and prod environment via ansible/puppet/similar, into an otherwise bare VM or container, with only a forward proxy to reach it. Doesn&#

BGP by itself is insecure, but an (RPKI) infrastructure has grown up around it so that it can, and should be by now, secure. Yet BGP injection attacks (ASN or prefix theft) happen regularly. The reason is that not everybody follows the best

Let me just point out the elephant in the room: Hacker News is exactly as bad as reddit. The crowd here thinks of itself as smarter, but that's just the shape of the echo chamber here. You think people commenting on reddit consider the
