Many of his main points are vacuous at best. "Adding insult to injury, it’s an extremely simple and ugly unlock-gesture, just the sweep of a mono-color bar from right to left." Since when is a function being simple a problem? And he's compa

Nobody is saying that they should standardize on Windows, just support it. The way Microsoft did the patch, using a cross-platform library that has support from another popular project, is the perfect way to address this issue.

Forking the project is less than ideal. Client libraries will have to spend time making sure they comply with both versions, and development in general will slow as each project will have fewer total devs. Better to bring that other team "i

You are right in that we're not BigCorps, but if anything, that makes it worse, as we don't have as many resources to spend setting up boxes we wouldn't have otherwise needed. It's not a moral and ethical calculation, it is a simple calcula

First, let's not get confused here. If you keep a Windows box around for Netflix and Steam, that has nothing to do with Microsoft's "passive-aggressive apathy". It has to do with the fact that Netflix and Steam chose not to develop for Linu

Think about it from the cost perspective. Not necessarily in terms of dollars, but in terms of time. There are thousands of BigCorps out there. There is only one Redis. If every BigCorp that runs mainly on a Windows stack (I'm personally co

We use Redis quite a bit in one of our products, Kiln. Because Kiln is mainly a Mercurial hosting platform, we offer it as a hosted product on our servers or, for companies who would prefer to have tighter control of where their source code

The analogy carries: there are things you can't do or are more tedious when you're opting out. You have to whitelist things for FlashBlock and AdBlock, your preferences aren't saved in private mode, etc. Moreover, I can still get your IP ad

I understand, but when you say "ruining the internet", I would prefer deceptive ads that blend in than those that make my eyes bleed, which is often the case with banner ads.

I disagree. I would rather ads blend in and disappear than be flashing in my face. If I click on something that sounds interesting and it turns out to be an ad, then they did a good job with it, because clearly it's something I'm interested

You're still making a distinction between online and the physical world, which is that for websites, you do something extra to opt out, whereas in the physical world you want to give explicit permission before they track you. Note that it's

Just to play devil's advocate, how is this any different from running analytics on your websites? They are keeping track of where people go, just like most people on HN do with their own users. And to be honest, I think it's a clever hack t

The comparison is between improving the product and traditional marketing. We found, over and over, that improving FogBugz (sometimes by adding new features, but not always) was much better at increasing sales. Recently, that's begun to cha

I have to believe that Apple has the engineering talent to scale something like this up. It's a pretty straight forward problem, and it's not like they don't have enough cash to double their server farm.

After a bit of digging, I learned that BitKeeper has, as a part of its EULA, a provision that disallows its users to contribute to other source control projects[1]. Larry McVoy (aka luckydude) has actually tried to enforce the EULA by conta
