How can Apple let people accidentally make purchases? Wouldn't anything charging to your credit card need an Apple pop-up with the listed price/rate to appear and you to accept it? I know people click "OK" to anything, b

I think that's the only excerpt from the blog post suggesting that companies will do this research out of good will. The reality is that this work is largely being done by academia and government research groups for now and it's u

Largely unrelated but MPEG of mp3 fame has just released MPEG-G, a compressed file format for genomic data. Predictably, it's on track to be saddled with patents. Imagine needing proprietary software to view your own genomic data - or

This doesn't seem like it would be that hard to happen - doesn't the US already mandate requirements that certain DOD purchases to be from within the US? The DOD probably buys enough to make it worthwhile for there to (continue to

Do note that the purchaser was not present at the time. They were bidding over the phone through an employee of the auction house. So no one recoiled over the money they themselves had wasted.

You're probably right given who it was that it wasn't a call for attention. However, the more respectable, more established someone is, the worse it makes this. It's hard to brush off the claims that the left wants to take aw

I don't think arming teachers is a good idea but I do know people that literally do. And Betsy DeVos has apparently been floating the idea of using federal funding to purchase those guns. [1] On the flip side, I've seen an op-ed i

I don't think genre literacy counts as a workaround: I think it's really the definition of what is or is not 6/8. The 6/8 time wheel gives a heavy bass drum on the four count. I don't notice such a thing in the walt

Hm, not sure I like the example for 6/8 time. It's so much slower tempo than 3/4 time example that it's very hard to compare the two for me.

Yeah my guess is that perfect timing-awareness and 200ms reaction time looks a lot like 0ms reaction time. Just start the action 200ms earlier - that'll work in enough cases that you'll look like you have perfect timing.
