Gcc collapses acos(cos(x)) to x on -O2? Surely not since this isn't even accurate for x outside of -pi to pi. That's ignoring floating point errors that make those two different which I thought was a different optimization flag,

You cut out the "had any kind of mass market appeal" part, which makes the claim much more plausible (though I couldn't rule out there being earlier examples too).

I figured these were a step further towards MLM: a single company selling individuals signs and a generic dating site for $3000 or whatever and promising them a portion of the proceeds. That way the central company never has to plant signs

I just had a project where we need to keep track of changes to a string as a series of insertions, deletions and substitutions. We don't want the whole history, so if someone inserted then deleted the thing they inserted, we would trac

Are those just black tiles or are they black noise reduction tiles? I don't see any indication of the later. Is vinyl a common material for noise reduction?

I can't imagine what you mean by historically accurate with regards to tales of near-immortals, gods, monsters, etc. How could archeology show the story of one man's voyage to be accurate, let alone the sirens and cyclops that he

Bufferbloat.net talks about this. The problem is that many home routers do a poor job allocating their resources so if I'm streaming video and you're VOIPing, your latency will go up dramatically since my download is pushing you o

Electronic records have a single point of attack for the entire country's data versus a breach at your local hospital. Makes beaches much worse while also greatly incentivizing the breach.

Also satellite dishes point roughly south if you're in the northern hemisphere. (They point towards geostationary satellites which have to be over the equator.) This is a more useful tip in some places than others.

I was under the impression that the military and maybe other branches of the US government have "no East Egg" rules for software they use, and I expected that to be the justification. Is this true? I found one document from a .mil

It's okay about the downvotes. Completely bizarre though: my comment was originally at +12 and got down to -2! HN is just inscrutable at times. I feel like the initial upvotes show that I was not alone in thinking his story is surprisi
