What a weird article. Given that there are yet to be devices like siri that use these new language models, it's fairly nonsensical to compare a "chatbot" like chatgpt to a device like Siri/Alexa/Google that actually

I think that is highly wishful thinking. In reality the links will just go to misinformation sites that are not on the up-and-up and thus not classified as actual news sources.

This is more philosophy than anything. The FDIC, an instituted paid for by taxes, was introduced because farmers lost everything in previous bank failures. Insuring deposits but not shares is entirely a choice made by society, not any inher

This is not a good analogy. The infrastructure, e.g. roads, is the one thing we all already do pay for via our ISP. It's the store fronts and movie theatres on the road that we want to be free, that are currently paid for by ads.

It's not entirely clear what our brains do, but it is definitely clear it's not the same as something like ChatGPT, even just from a structural point of view. I'm sure there is some sort of statistcal pattern matching going o

I agree that there is nothing wrong with programming as an art. I enjoy things like the old demo scene, or writing the shortest code, or other forms of programming feats, even elegant designs or proofs. But when I'm building a product

I don't actually care much about the title. You are very welcome to criticize it if you want, but what you are reading into the title is not what the article itself said, and the poster I replied to specifically cited the article not t

Did you read the same article I did? It explicitly said expertise is more important than technology choice. From the article: "Think about it this way. If you were trying to solve any problem with software, which would you choose? A un

I won't play any iOS game with either ads or with a "free but micro-transaction model." If you look in the pay up front category on the app store, there are very very few games. It's too bad.

Almost all of these "recalls" that make the news are just software patches. The only difference between these and a normal patch is that customers get an email about it. I can understand why people might think that all these recal

That’s a good idea but I’m guessing that using it for query expansion will only lead to marginal improvements as you are still limited by the main search engine.

The comparison is not against "most people" though. When we search the web we usually want an answer from an "expert" not some random internet poster. If you compare ChatGPT even to something like WebMD, well, I'll

These technologies can and likely will help improve search in the future, but there is still a ton of work to be done both on how specifically to use them and also on scaleability. There is also the business model to sort out. Right now sea

As someone who understands how these models are built and what they do, let me just say that almost all of what you think these models can do is wrong. For one, you can't just "hook up" a language model to some other task, or

Decomposing a large query into smaller subsets is the right approach, but I would strongly suggest doing it with VIEWs rather than CTEs. CTEs are a useful tool, but come with their own performance profiles and often using them too much will

PR wise to who though? I don't think any of Microsoft's customers actually care. For developer hiring yeah it will hurt their PR, but at the end of the day sorry to say devs tend to go where the pay is highest irrespective of PR.

Yes. Machine learning models learn from the data they are fed. Thus, they end up with the same biases that humans have. There is no "natural" fix to this, as we are naturally biased. And even worse, we don't even all agree on
