Snapshots and diffs are dual. Most version control systems operate on snapshots, but there is at least one that doesn't: Darcs. Written in Haskell, it bases it's operation on an algebra of patches. Unfortunately, while usable (and

I realise I'm likely an outlier here, but I absolutely hate every single clothing piece shown in the article. This is because I dislike tight clothes in general and long sleeves in particular. It is also unclear how much actual savin

Nah, you should be using another value if you care about that. For example in C# a nullable bool would be a fine choice (three values: true, false, null), or alternatively Option types.

It isn't immediately obvious that FP requires GC. Sure, the languages we have right now make use of GC, but it is far from certain that there is no way for a subset of FP features to exist in a language without GC.

The alternative coping mechanism would be not to sit at all if most of the sitting spaces are already taken. I sometimes did so as I expected to have to vacate my spot in only a few minutes.

There are all sorts of arbitrary requirements to behave in certain way as a proxy of achieving results. Unfortunately this is quite common as it makes the manager feel safe and in control if his subordinates achieve the results in the way s

Simple using which metric? As far as programming languages go, C++ is one of the most complex ones. Which is funny because e.g. Haskell has way more advanced type system and still is easier to understand.

While it looks like copying Apple, it doesn't necessarily mean this is a bad idea. Google did produce TPUs so this isn't theirs first rodeo. Also Apple is using ARM so whatever are their improvements, others can potentially match.

Things which aren't risky on some level just don't get regulated. There is a ton of risk involved in pharmacies.

It feels like it would be much easier to modify the nuclear weapons to be immune to this device than to actually build it. OTOH it may be easier to build than authors assume: what if it is build in orbit so it doesn't have shoot the be

We have neural networks in our brains which for some reason cannot be trained without practice in real world. No amount of reading about riding will train those real-time feedback loops that operate on much lower latencies then you can form

One could explain the mistake to have different units on both side without fractions at all: 1+1=1 One shoe plus one shoe equals one pair of shoes. Once they grasp that explaining the fraction issue should be easier.

While I believe that there was no dishonest effort to manipulate the charts it is worth noting that the vote counts are both hidden from general population and adjusted by hand to remove "fraudulent votes". This can easily move so

I can leave the company at will (respecting the notice period) but they cannot easily get rid of me. They can eliminate the role I'm in, but they must offer me a replacement if they can. Of course due to covid a lot of companies have t

Huh, I have permanent contract without end date. It is forbidden here to keep people on short term contracts indefinitely. Raise is done as an amendment to the contract and, technically, can be refused.

How is this even legal? FB signed contract to pay X amount of dollars and now it can lower that amount unilaterally and without any kind of warning? Mind boggling to me, but then again I live in Europe... So, how does it work in US?

For the use case described in the article it sounds just fine. The content part is a big vague. If read very broadly it would be super prohibitive. Perhaps it is?

It sounds like you could use Google's live traffic info to augment your own predictions. You should be fine with just a few API calls. This would be pretty cheap - perhaps even within the free tier.
