I know you're ranting to the world at large, but I am not "going nuts over scaling issues". All my websites are static HTML files. I regenerate them as needed using custom Python code and my "databases", which are text files in JSON. I ha

I think if you're worried about whether or not you use modulo to calculate alternating table rows (and you don't work for Facebook), then you're almost certainly optimizing prematurely.

"Barefoot" running is much easier on the knees. You land differently and thus avoid the sudden jolting stops.

In my neighborhood, it's much harder to bike a long enough distance for a good exercise. You can get a much better workout using a smaller "track" when running. Running isn't super bad for you. You need medium impact to build bone density,

Very insightful. I don't think I've seen this list all in one place before.

It doesn't seem to be in the News Guidelines any longer, but the prevailing opinion on HN is that comments that simply say "I agree" or the like: 1) Add nothing to the conversation. Just upvote if you agree; also commenting to that effect a

First, the title should be changed. The source article is titled "Score One for the Robo-Tutors" or "Machine Learning: Score One for the Robo-Tutors", not "Students Learn as Well from Software as from Live Teachers". Secondly, this is an in

Okay, so I read the entire report. I'd love to see the standard deviation for the "minutes worked per day" figure. I'd bet that it is high. I've worked in public education for fifteen years, and I know almost no teachers who work as little

I'm not sure I believe that number. I guess some super highly-paid regions are throwing off the average. Starting teacher salary in my district is $42,000 per year for a 187-day contract. Assuming the teachers only work 7 hours a day (which

Is that 7K more than the average wage of a person with a bachelor's degree? Or just the average person? I suspect the two numbers are not the same.

I think it's a shame that this is targetted at the hacker-musician community, but the development environment is almost Windows only. (Written in C#, partially working under Mono on OS X, not tested under Linux.) I suspect the vast majority

I have students that have been programming (in Java) for two years and have coded simple arcade games from scratch. These same students will spend more than five minutes unsuccessfully trying to get a single CodeCademy exercise to work. (I

The core problem is what you've identified in your blog. You assignments don't explain many core concepts that students struggle with, they move WAY too quickly through concepts, and there's no coherent sequence. For example, in the middle

I've had a couple dozen students working through many of the CodeCademy programs this semester as an experiment. And most of the Javascript lessons currently on the site are just barely above mediocre.

It's not common sense, in my experience. Most programmers who have tried to teach code at all have done so to someone with extraordinary aptitude (i.e. like themselves).

In general this is very cool. Some constructive criticism: 1) I was really expecting an actual programming language instead of "just" HTML/CSS. 2) When watching some of the CSS demos, the switch back and forth between the HTML tab and the

My biggest new-Gmail-design pet-peeve is that the Display Density setting is only respected if your browser window is wide enough. I prefer the "Comfortable" setting. I have a 22" monitor at 1680x1050, but I don't have my browser window m

What's wrong with striving for a more 'mouse-free environment'? And what about 'tmux and why it came about' is missing from the book, in your opinion?

The author of the OP has written two books for teaching children (aged 7-10 or so) to code by having them type in or copy completed code, so this tutorial just continues in his typical style.

I disagree. The sugar question is settled in nutrition science. Sugar that doesn't occur naturally in food is pretty bad for you. But underqualified people have different opinions and get a disproportionate amount of face time on media. I

The word 'dietitian' is protected similarly in the United States, and the word 'nutritionist' is similarly unprotected.

I'll admit that I'm biased, because my wife has a PhD in nutrition (as well as being a registered dietitian), but my best friend from high school is now an MD, and my wife knows more about nutrition and its effect on the body than he does.

I've never heard of Alan Aragon, but he claims to have a master's degree in nutrition. That's a HELL of a lot more nutrition training than your average MD gets. I'm sure both have tons of post-degree self-study in nutrition, and that's virt
