No, we can't configure our own. The network settings config is locked out using policy controls.

The behavior also causes problems in my workplace, too. I work in a public school, and we use an Internet filter as required by law. One part of the filter is attached to our default DNS server, and it looks up novel domains to see if they

Educators are allowed to use movies in their entirety for face-to-face teaching situations. I am a teacher, and our school librarians are quite well-informed on the specifics of fair use for educators.

I don't think this does explain the disparity. Most core teachers I know also have an additional 10-20 hours of "unpaid" prep time. (Time outside that 40 hours, anyway.) I think the disparity is more reflected in the relative value of one-o

Yes, in my district teacher salaries range from $42,000 to $60,000 depending on experience (0 to 30 years of experience, respectively). My first year teaching I'd estimate I put in 70 hours a week. Now (with fifteen years of experience) it'

For what it's worth, a starting teacher in my district (a suburb of Austin, TX) would make $42,000 a year, for a 187-day contract. Assuming 8-hour days (admittedly unrealistic for a first-year tech), that's $28 an hour. I personally charge

Do you have some examples? I thought I knew a fair number of programming languages, and Python's got one of the most comprehensive. IMO, Python's stdlib beats C++, Ruby, Java, javascript and Perl....

Agreed. I learned about ge.tt from a HN comment on a Techcrunch story about Kicksend 4-1/2 months ago. And ge.tt has the fewest "clicks" to share a file I've ever seen. I've recommended it to non-technical friends a few times since.

Have you personally tried changing to xfce, gnome-shell or KDE in Ubuntu 11.10? I have, and it's decidedly non-trivial. Switching to a different distro would probably be easier.

True, but in America the the 'before' photo is especially problematic. Though it clearly isn't pornographic, a topless (presumably) under-aged girl is potentially job-hazardous. For example, I'm a public high-school teacher; I'm quite glad

I have quite a few home movies of family members that take up quite a bit of space. And my personal music collection is in the 100s of gigabytes (all legally purchased and ripped from CD).

He wrote "for about 20 bucks", so I suspect he spent around $20. And "maxed out my Dropbox referrals" seems to imply that he did it up to the maximum for Dropbox referrals, which is 8 GB.

I agree. I LOVE the python-in-javascript REPLs, but so far NONE of them have console i/o. (Python's raw_input command isn't implemented, for example.) And that makes these a non-starter for my courses unless I completely rewrite all my assi

My class is a high-school course. Not sure if you're suggesting that Khan Academy's material is pitched at college students, but I don't think that's true.

So what I'm suggesting is: take 200 students, and have 100 go through Khan's material, and 100 go through mine. Khan's kids would finish faster. Then, have all 200 kids attempt to code FizzBuzz on their own, with no assistance. I think prob

The other high schools in my district do a more breadth-oriented first-year course using Scratch, Jeroo, Alice and Python, and that works pretty well for them. I will say that Stacy Armstrong's "A+ Computer Science" curriculum is quite good

I'd bet $100 that the AP exam will switch to Python within ten years. And probably not much more than 5. (No sooner than that though, or they'd have to have announced it already; major changes in public education need a LOT of lead time.) H

How many kids take the class? How many do well? I have 75 kids in three sections, and I'd have 100 kids in four sections if they'd open up a fourth section. And all of my students except maybe the bottom 5-10% are moving confidently through

I wish we could start teaching real programming in middle school at least. I think just variables, if statements and some sort of looping construct ought to be mandatory in education.
