100% agree. Above all, understand who your customer is, what they need and how they value that need before you begin to think of your solution... By all means, start with a hypothesis and "big idea," but conduct thorough qualitati

I wonder if there is a performance component to this, or if it's based solely on him sticking around for the long haul. I just finished up an earn out with performance goals on both revenue and margin, and found it to be very challengi

This is awesome news. I received my Oculus in the first batch and have had a ton of fun playing around with it (save the occasional nausea, but that's really game-specific). Agree with some comments here that the Rift needs more VR-spe

On your point about lack of pricing transparency and inability to forecast costs with AWS, check out CloudCheckr. It helped us get much better visibility into our AWS costs. I still feel like I'm overpaying with AWS, but at least I hav

I completely agree... I'm hoping the Oculus opens up a new style of gaming that isn't focused on shooting and competitive gaming and instead centers instead around immersion and cooperative gaming. While I'm known to play the occasional FPS

Similar experience here... Despite repeated pleas to IT, they closed all of our network ports to be able to access our app's database or git repositories, so if we want to do anything (legitimately) we have to work from home. Brilliant!

I wish I had read this advice a year ago. Keeping your spirits up is really hard, particularly if you want to get going on the next business, but it's critical if you care about your team and their well being when you are gone.

I think it's the former. This feels to me like a marketing strategy and loss leader to grab a new set of customers and eventually migrate them into the full Basecamp product. I could see people saying to themselves, "I love this email list

Some of these examples have less to do with the fact that a goal was set, and more to do with the fact that there was a financial incentive tied to it. Financial incentives can have the side effect of reducing intrinsic motivation (see Dani

As someone who learned to code recently (last 3 years), this advice is good but dangerous in the long-term. I started by typing out other people's code from various books or tutorials, but found that it produced a feeling of "success" that

This post hit close to home for me. I have had very similar work experiences as the OP (having done both a startup with two co-founders and management consulting), and found that the biggest factor is whether you are introverted or extrover

I like the concept. There is a lot of redundancy whenever you go to start a new social app. Quick recommendation - I clicked through three pages before I got to the "About" page, and it wasn't until I got to that page that I fully understoo

If anyone is curious as to the research on this topic, check out Carol Dweck's book "Mindset." It has a ton of examples from academia, sports and business on fixed vs. growth mentalities and how that plays into a person's success in life.
