As suggested by my original comment, I read the source of a lot of the open source projects around ML. mdaniel is absolutely correct. They are not software engineers. I'm not vocal about the naïve stuff, poor design, sloppy formatting,

The Dish (2000) is a pretty fun fictional (I assume) account of the Parkes team.

The rise of generated slop ml libraries is staggering. This library is 50% print statements. And where it does branch, it doesn't even need to. Defines two environment variables and sets two flags on torch.

CoT is now their primary method for alignment. Exposing that information would negate that benefit. I don't agree with this, but it definitely carries higher weight in their decision making than leaking relevant training info to other

Linux has a rich ecosystem, but the toolkit is haphazard and a little shakey. Sure, everyone uses it, because when we last evaluated our options (in like 2009) it was still the most robust solution. That may no longer be the case. Given all

I can't believe a group of engineers are so afraid of residential power. It is not expensive, nor is it highly technical. It's not like we're factoring in latency and crosstalk... Read a quick howto, cruise into Home Depot an

I do this, too. And since we practice it far more regularly than a periodic visit to a specialist, we probably have cleaner teeth than most.

It's just gatekeeping. Artists put a ton of time into education and refining their vision inside the craft. Amateur efforts to produce compelling work always look amateur. With augmentation, suddenly the "real" artists aren&#

I saw a talk recently from one of their prompt engineers where he encouraged XML-style tag use as well. Supported by the training datasets they use.

GPT is still a language model, so at some point it's still just tokens. Is this just a schema validation layer on their end to avoid the round trip (and cost) of repeating the call?

Went through this same exercise this week and came to the same conclusion. After trying multiple open models, reconfiguring GPT-4o and seeing the speed and quality of the output was illuminating.
