Many apps (e.g. EteSync and WireGuard) are almost useless if they don't work for everyone within a certain group. A more extreme example is a messaging app. Will not having iOS support for a messaging app lose you 40% of your users? No

Users demand it. You can't have a popular VPN app without Apple support (because at least one person in the org will have an iDevice), so you have to do it. I made another comment in this thread about my experience building EteSync. Th

The iOS and macOS apps have been the biggest point of stress and frustration when building EteSync[1]. The API is buggy as hell and very limited (if at all available) and the review process is arbitrary and can cause updates to be rejected.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, I can't believe I didn't know about this. However I just tried it and I can't get it to work. I added this to the top of https://github.com/etesync/etebase-rs/blob&#x

etesync.com already does it, and has it for years. Open source and an open protocol. Supported in GNOME and KDE (starting from the next version) and a lot of clients for other platforms too. Disclaimer: I created it.

I also like Rustdoc, using markdown and the new linking improvements. It's much better than learning yet another DSL. However, there's one thing I find annoying, and that's the lack of a structure for parameters. Following th

Thanks a lot! Yeah, A LOT of work went into this. :) As for the wide client SDK support: I think it's essential for adoption so made it a priority. Great to see it being appreciated!

I think it's very different to supabase.io. They are focusing on being a Firebase alternative, we are focusing on making it easy to build encrypted applications. Not the same target audience and not the same offering. With that being s

Local cache: no, you need to do it yourself once the app goes online. We plan on having things like that soon as part of support for automatic conflict resolution and etc. Running your own server: trivial, not even a couple of hours. Check

We are not going to implode under our expenses. We keep our expenses in check (and have been for the last four years), and we put a big emphasis on the sustainability of the service.

Haha, thanks! <3 I don't think we are really direct competitors, we are targeting a different niche. It's just that you are the best example of a backend-as-a-service and thus the best way to explain what we do. :)

Oops, fixed. Thanks! Make money: hosting the service, yeah. Though also from our user facing apps. Production ready: yeah. We use it for EteSync (our user facing apps), and through that it's been integrated to GNOME, KDE, Tasks.org and

Thanks for your questions! What we have now is the first step of our vision. It supports offline-first apps in the sense that you can work offline and sync later. If you are talking about not using a server at all: that's coming too. A

Thank you! :) That's a question that's looms over every new company and open-source project. I don't think Firebase will go down this route, it's a very different offering to what they already have, and any encrypted stu

This is a very good question, and one thing we had issues with over the years while developing EteSync. At EteSync, we ended up building client side debug utils that we can get users to launch in order to figure out what's going on and

Collections are private to each user, so users only have access to their own collections. They can however share them among eachother.

I don't think Firefox sync makes it very easy for devs to build other encrypted applications. Even if they did however, there are a lot of challenges with encrypted applications that they just don't take care of. Not to mention th

Yeah, in Etebase the server also just sees "things", though it tries to make it easy on the client to only get what's changed and etc.

Thank you for your kind words! I think the encryption is the key differentiator here, at least for me. I don't want my data saved exposed on someone else's server, AKA the cloud.

Yeah, as I said in my main comment, there are still things that need to be done. One of them is strong quotas. We plan on having it in the near future (we are also running a service, EteSync, using Etebase) though I think it's not an i

EteSync and EteSync Notes: I'd say yes. To be honest, it's way too cheap for what it is. :) Yes, the protocol can support that, though it's not yet implemented. Not sure what you meant with the rest of your comment.

You don't have to self-host Etebase, you can also use the hosted version on etebase.com if you wish. However, what we are offering here is an alternative to the Firebase APIs, rather than the fact that it's cloud hosted.

The salt is kept on the server, so you can just fetch it again when switching devices. However, on the long term, we plan on considering passwords more of a backup feature, and instead move to a model where you just authorise your devices f

Always great to see more end-to-end encrypted applications! Looks very cool, I'd love to chat if you are willing, my email is tom @ etebase, could you please drop me a line?
