It really sucks that these shipping companies can act as customs brokers without the consent of the recipient. They rack up huge fees for this "service". They should be required to get an agreement or rejection before proceeding

This is likely the intended result, without caring at all if it generates revenue for the large media corporations. Consolidated media is easier to influence and manipulate.

It would be nice to be able to create an account that isn't linked to such large corporations. The future seems to be that these players will become gatekeepers, even for things that have nothing to do with them. Piss Google Off? Lo

People are still desperate to maintain humankind at the top of the intellectual pyramid. It's tiresome and a waste of energy. There are definitely limits to intelligence, nothing will ever be smart enough to predict the future perfec

I guess the point I was hoping to make, was that blaming "capitalism" isn't helpful, and seems like a very common and counterproductive emerging zeitgeist. It's like blaming organized religion for all the ills of our p

Is a comment section user-to-user, though? On its face, it seems more user-to-public, since it's not a private user-to-user transmission. If blog comment sections are exempt, it would seem Reddit is exempt too.

This is a fascinating article, and makes me want to explore bpftrace if nothing else. As an aside, I wish people would display a date on such posts, making it easier to deduce the context and current relevance.

When I was a kid, the city garbage men used to walk behind our house, grab the metal garbage bins that weren't lined with plastic bags, carry them back to the truck, dump them, and then return them empty back to where they were found.

Perhaps it's just avoiding the need to encapsulate an InfiniBand transport packet? I'm not sure how much overhead that introduces in RDMA, but DMTCP may just be an effort to divorce the idea from its original IB underpinnings.

I would argue that the root problem here is: why isn't one parent able to stay home with the children? We shouldn't need nearly as many daycares as we currently do. It's simply a consequence of bad economic and social plann

To some degree that is true, but it is definitely the continuation of the system that generated and distributed all that wealth. And the people actively undermining faith in our current system, aren't advocating a return to a less cor

Call me a conspiracy nut, but there appears to be a coordinated effort to destroy faith in the system that gave us all the wealth we currently enjoy. I can only assume that this is being done in the service of replacing it with... somethin

That makes sense. Although, it goes against the dismissive post to which I was replying, that said Reddit will provide all the missing functionality without a problem.

The theory being that it will revert to more manual, hands on moderation, rather than automated and more sweeping (eg. instantly banning people for simply posting in an unrelated but disfavored sub).

When was the last time you took a political stance that cost you your income (ie. flow of money)? For the majority of people, money is a fair proxy for quality-of-life; it makes sense that it permeates their ideology and politics.

Judging from the current state of research and education, I think that it will take a lot more than a polite refusal. You will be required to comply if you wish to participate.

IMHO, the world is going to become much more authoritarian. What else to do when you can no longer trust even audio or video of any scene; when anyone can create video of any politician saying anything they want? In response, laws, contr

IMHO, Twitter fundamentally needed a huge shakeup, which Elon has done. I've enjoyed and used my account more since he took over than in any of the years prior. Still, it's obvious a lot of people are unhappy with the changes; b

Ironic that you would confuse your emotionally felt bias, for a fact. There are many good and decent people, who are firmly rooted in reality and facts, that count themselves as part of the Republican base. We need to return to political

Oh, at some point we'll be hit by a meteor, and anyone who manages to avoid death in the initial impact will surely starve to death. But then, a dip in rice production, no worse than one from twenty years prior, won't be the iss

There has always been enough food to feed the hungry, and there will continue to be enough with this rice shortage. That's not the reason people starve.

So food will cost more. But nobody remembers the rice shortage of 20 years ago; and this one will also be largely irrelevant, in the big scheme of things.
