It's a story like this that illustrates the power of a good idea, the ability to get stuff done, and some software. $750,000,000 is a lot of value to create in 3 years. And full marks to Google, who may have over-paid, but they've done so s

Agreed. I haven't held the Droid, but most video reviews of the interface reveal a need to re-click items and a delay in scrolling/reacting to touch commands. That's my impression anyway. This doesn't happen with regularity on the iPhone. I

The pros won't be wrong about this, but I'm glad they've tried it out before I do. The graphic actually makes me fearful of not being able to control the rate of stopping, as though I'd somehow lose the ability to modulate the depth of edge

It won't be too long before the value of the ads placed in applications like this will be able to subsidize the entire experience, globally. Google is in the business of bringing their services TO you, this application being one good exampl

FUD-ing indeed. I agree. That comment is almost something I'd expect more readily from Apple than Microsoft these days, given how Apple manages the iPhone/iTunes platform (disclosure, I have an iPhone and can't remember life as worth living

Good points. But I'm not sure I would trust someone with a card reader on his iPhone to swipe my credit card. . . . And while I'm also uncomfortable at the gas station doing the same, I have a higher degree of confidence that the station is

A external hardware-based solution? In an age when banks are already allowing photographs of cheques be deposited? A "mobile" payment solution has to work from software on out, while deploying existing hardware in devices: cameras, touch sc

Google's profits were up 27% (as reported today) while Nokia was reporting a loss. I doubt anyone on this site finds this surprising. Google is doing what Google does, which is to say it brings its services to users and users use them. And

Yes, I hear you. I'm not sure Steve Jobs actually said that quote verbatim, but here's where I first learned of it: http://counternotions.com/2008/08/12/concept-products/ What's interesting about this dual-screen "prototype" is that we're

Net neutrality? Has to happen. Unlimited bandwidth? Can't happen. No business is sustainable without a usage cap. The all-you-can-eat buffet will get a few pigs at the trough but there's still a cap: night falls and the restaurant is closed

This some good analysis. I had no idea of the bigger vision of the XMPP protocol. In the near term I've been working through how we could use Wave within some of our (relatively) simple content-creation processes at work, particularly aroun

37signals is doing what they like to do . . . and Mint is completely justified in doing what they chose to do. Once a company grows to a certain size, things change. Some entrepreneurs can grow with the change. Some can't or don't want to.

Everything operates in landscape mode except the phone? On my iPhone, landscape mode usually means two hands, whereas portrait means one, using my thumb to point or scroll. It's not a huge thing, but an important feature for me. My phone is

Great points. I bet you're right that the $106.5m number could be easily returned and more. What I like about Google's approach, compared to Microsoft's or Apple's or Comcast's or [insert Fortune 500 company], is that their goal is to not m

Is there any company, big or small, that is doing more for the Internet than Google? In fact, they may have already done more than any other company ever. This acquisition, plus what's going on with pubsubhubbub over the past few weeks, wil

In this regard (fighting the gorillas) I really respect Google for its consistency: they're once again fighting for Net neutrality, this time wireless networks and not just the (my) traditional definition of the Internet. I have an iPhone w
