They are deliberately using an inflammatory title and too-big terms for the constituencies they are describing. If they define the Global North as the United States and the UK, they should just say that. If by the Global South they mean Ind

Most corporate software development is done in teams, and the primary limiting factor is not individual competence, but the ability to work well with others. It sounds like you will do just fine.

This is not really about intelligence once you clear the bar of doing well in a CS program, which you have. The right solutions, and correct implementations, come as the result of a lot of effort and experience. If you are not making new mi

I am honestly not sure what point you are arguing. I have personally activated, paid for, and sent on expeditions multiple Starlink systems, including the newer marine version. You seem very upset about something I’m not talking about.

Ok, I went and looked and the free 30-day trial was already in place weeks before the natural disaster: https://www.cnet.com/home/internet/starlink-internet-review/ They didn’t do anything but offer the same

If you donate something that is spare capacity on infrastructure that has a marginal cost of the data outflow from your servers on earth, and the customer has to buy aging hardware that you are also sitting on inventory of, and that hardwar

It is marketing on the back of a natural disaster. Again, a nice gesture is actual charity, not a “the first month is free” promotional cliche.

Yes, offering the service probably has some marginal cost, but I am positive it is well within their projected (and profitable) CAC. People who are donating have zero chance of a positive financial outcome. That is why it is called a donati

They do not have exclusionary rights, that was the whole point of all of the telco and cable anti-trust work. I don’t particularly like Comcast but the internet has been successfully preserved as a commodity, and communities worth serving a

I can see either a philanthropic/vanity project or (maybe? very optimistically?) a profitable business, but not both. Areas in need of humanitarian aid provided by airships is a too-small niche to (re-)develop entirely new flight techn

I’m not sure how disaster recovery will be over in a month, or how monopolies will become major Starlink users undetected.

So someone who doesn’t need to make money is building blimps to revolutionize air transport and you are proposing that company is going to then halt business during storms and travel to and float over hurricane recovery areas?

My comment has little to do with zero sum, but I’ll assume you’re trying to imply that people in rural NC are going to re-subscribe to their local ISP and keep the promotional ISP, you know, once everything is repaired. But let’s change the

It is weird what happens when you privatize so much and then find out too late it isn’t profitable for companies to have fleets of emergency internet blimps primed and ready to go 24/7.

How long does it take to rebuild fiber infrastructure? This is not a kindness, it is a promotion. Six months would be a kindness.

I don't know if I would call it smoke and obfuscation, at the time systemd was not widely deployed and the ssh functionality was not as developed, so it made sense to use autossh. Now it sounds like it doesn't make sense anymore.

Your mistake, the right way to do this is to optimize 100% for the leetcode interview and 0% for how to do a job. You get hired and undercontribute for nine months before putting in notice after you win another interview, which is easier th

It’s an interesting point but your argument fails in that you get a standard deduction that probabilistically exceeds the expenses related to your job. Perhaps it would need to be something like x%revenue above $10M, y%revenue above 1B begi

It’s weird to say but the whole startup culture has shifted, from founder to hacker and everywhere in between. It’s a victim of its own success because no one is writing feature pieces in media on quants or finance bros with the same gusto
