There has been work done one optimizing regular base64 using SSE: http://www.alfredklomp.com/programming/sse-base64/

Now I see, you’re right. Posted this just before bedtime, so I saw the comment only this morning. This uses the debian language benchmarks, in search of what it was that was different I falsely concluded this must be about compilation speed

This is a really strange benchmark to use. Compiler speed is not an issue for these 100ish line standalone benchmarks. The question is how fast it is for a million-line project or worse. I doubt c or c++ do good there with their header file

I can imagine the maintainers being scared of silently breaking the workflow and monitoring for some users. If you change this feature to opt-in, you may silently break the alerting system users built on top of this feature, and then you ge

Admitting mistakes is one thing. Admitting that what the organization has set out to do is unachievable is another.

Beyond the fraud allegations, the idea that an organisation can just print extra money as they see fit, doesn’t that go against the principles of crypto finance? I am genuinely curious why people think that is a sustainable idea.

Nice to know repair is still possible in this generation of the product. I repaired a trackman marble the same way some 10 years ago. It’s nevertheless sad that the design is flawed like that.

The article glosses over one thing: you should have at least one backup that is not accessible through the company network. A different site connected to the same network is accessible by ransomware gangs once they are in.

Yeah there’s a difference in techniques used for lossy vs lossless. But my point was that in compression research, runtime performance was much less important than compression performance, that was no different for lossy compression.

Traditional compression research usually prioritized compression ratio, so more images would fit on your floppy disks and were faster to download over 28.8k modems. It usually means increased complexity. Png has it’s own story as it’s #1 de

For renewable energy, low efficiency is not a problem per se: you can make as much as you want. The article also mentions that they don’t need rare materials for the electrolyser, which means it will be cheaper. Lithium, that modern batteri

In the article the author said that his “cleaner” version had less duplicate code, but was harder to adapt to new usecases. His point is that clean looking code is sometimes harder to change, because while cleaning people introduce abstract

If you scan in color/grayscale, it can’t use JBIG2 compression. The machine will likely use JPEG for lossy compression, could result in less crisp scans, but it eliminates this risk.

The code has a CRC code embedded. Why is it that every article mentioning CRC codes brings up that you can write them as polynomials? AFAICT it never makes a difference in implementation. What am I missing?

The dutch privacy authority, with GDPR in hand, can fine them up to 2-4% of their annual revenue for not disclosing the data breach: such disclosures are a GDPR requirement.

Most, but not all of the team were young, and the DB schema was designed by themselves. I did not intend to throw blame. It is more the kind of situation where a sensible decision (at first glance) creates a footgun down the road.

If someone publishes info on how your API’s work that should not be a security problem unless you “implement security” client side. That would also explain the request to takedown the github repo, as well as why the API suddenly changes.

A plus for the benchmarks. One more complication of xor xx,xx goes unmentioned: xor also (partially) affects the flags register. That should get renamed as well.
