I tried to indicate your first point in the post: > But for small startups like mine, ... > Brand awareness doesn’t exist if your customers number in the hundreds. I think it's clear that I'm talking about landing pages for a ce

Thanks for bringing this up. I'm the OP. Please note my response to a similar comment below: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5416724 You're right that the logo is not only below the fold. There is a dimmed version in the top right

Thanks. The point is to place the logo low on the visual heirarchy. 'Below the fold' is just a snappier (and also somewhat less accurate) way of stating that point.

That's a great example. Although unfortunately many newspaper websites are placing ads in that location.

(I'm the author.) You're right that a dimmed logo shows there, but it's low on the visual hierarchy. So this still fits the goal I explain in the post: put what customers want to know first.

I'm Jarrod, the guy behind Bootstrapping Design. Sorry I'm late to this thread, and thank you for sharing the book! There are a couple of other design ebooks worth a look: Sacha Greif's Step By Step UI Design: http://sachagreif.com/ebook/

The email newsletter is a medium. It's often abused, but that's not the fault of the medium. Saying all newsletters are useless is a lot like saying all books are useless. Are there terrible books? Yes. Are there terrible newsletters? Yes.

Sorry about that. The hinting on Calluna via Typekit isn't so great. I need to switch to a different font for paragraphs.

Yes, it's a web app, but not subscription based. Essentially: create account, create toolkit, pay, download. No drag and drop, WYSIWYG stuff like the others you linked. Purely focused on customizing a design style. Hope that answers your qu

Why did you buy those programming books sitting on your shelf? Because you wanted to learn to code so you could do X. (Probably get a job, get clients, make cool things, etc.) Copywriting is an effort to connect with the reader and tell the

Just wanted to share my perspective as someone who is relatively new to HN, but has had some successful (if that's the right word) threads about my projects. The first post I submitted was a most-mortem about my startup. IIRC, it make the t

Most of the PayPal bashing I see is due to their strange policies with merchants. Horror stories of frozen accounts, forced refunds, etc. That's the main reason I don't use them. But yes, the terrible UI doesn't help either.

I'm in the US, and I only see the redesign on the homepage, not after log in. Maybe they haven't rolled the rest out yet.

Also, I should have clarified: on the original landing page, the language I used was: "Coming soon." "Want to know when it's ready?" The original design is here: http://cl.ly/0o143s3d053r3V2B2K3v I put up the page with every intention to

Thanks! The fact that we both launched design ebooks on the same day and both succeeded shows how awesome the community is.

Agreed--in many of these cases, people need education about how to properly use display faces.

What's funny about this is the changes are not only the typeface. The creator is also correcting proximity, alignment, etc. I'd argue those factors make a much bigger difference in the quality of a design than typeface choice.

What you're saying is that Lobster, Bello, and Museo offend your sensibilities and are used frequently. That doesn't mean they are of poor quality. Bad choices? Maybe. Bad typeface designs? No.

I'm sorry you felt deceived. I really did start writing within a day or so of the initial landing page launch because enough people showed interest. So the goal of those emails I sent was not to gauge interest (I already knew that), but to

If anything, Lobster is the new FF Dax. Dax and its siblings were the popular startup branding typefaces a few years back. And, Comic Sans is not a terrible typeface. It's just terrible for almost every application, except for comic book le

I can't help but wonder whether leaving money on the table and leaving complexity on the table are correlated to such a severe degree at every price higher than $150. Big customers are dangerous, and I've seen businesses where I have worked

I'm not convinced it's selection bias, but just that there is a huge range in skillsets now. In my personal network, I'd estimate that more than 50% of the designers I know are competent front end coders. (I've worked at a couple of large a

I think learning design can seem really difficult after a cursory glance at the design community. Sorry to mention this, but it's the best way I know to help. I wrote an ebook about design specifically for coders and technical founders. It
