Nice tips, although doesn't look comprehensive. It's certainly hard learning all the gotchas of shell scripting. In Deployment from Scratch I teach minimum amount of Bash to get servers up and running. I avoid teaching anything I

Ghosting is really the worst. And it doesn't matter if it's a romantic relationship, friendship or professional interaction. Why can't people see themselves on the other side of the line?

This is terrible. Tech recruiting needs some serious change. As a positive counter point, I got last two contracting jobs by having one lunch/coffee and just talking for half an hour. No grind, no CS questions, not even checking on ref

I only make a small dent from my self-published book (Deployment from Scratch), but at least I get to keep it. If I write a story one day, I would love to do it with a good publisher and be in the book stores, but for technical content I&#x

I would prefer Fedora, but if I am on AWS and Amazon Linux is the one that gets the awesome Amazon support, then choosing Amazon Linux might be compelling. Of course I would prefer they use Fedora and contribute to Fedora directly.

Do you want a genuine Black Friday deal? I am giving a 33% off of my book Deployment from Scratch[0] with discount code "blackfriday". The discount is bigger than even the one on launching and most of the copies are sold for full

No, Fedora is general purpose. Source: Fedora developer, previously employed at Red Hat as a Linux packager.

A level of support within AWS. ...and with this new version, a great support for SELinux too (because of Fedora). Some don't like the push for Snaps as well. I think SELinux is one of the biggest differences and the hardest to adapt to

You pointed the obvious without maybe realizing it. I find most people lose energy by eating lunch. So skip lunch or make it super small and light.

Good post. I think that for most it's best to start with self publishing which is what I did for Deployment from Scratch[0]. I cannot imagine I would have just half the revenue or something like 15%/2. Technical publishing won

Both Rails 7 and Phoenix 1.6 is going off Webpack by default and I am so looking into the esbuild future. I never really liked Webpack to be honest. I already replaced Webpack in my Phoenix project (you can compare default steps for buildin

1. Hotwire uses this approach for mobile as well (Hey and Basecamp are built this way) 2. Or you expose an API for those mobile clients. You might still be saving more work (but this is subjective and depends on the project).

If someone wants to know how to host a database for the first time, I have a full chapter on PostgreSQL (and one on Redis) in my new book https://deploymentfromscratch.com/ . There is also a demo that sets up an independent

Until Heroku has a huge downtime (like recently) and you are f*ked. If you have your own VMs, you can quickly move them to a different provider, but it's hard to start figuring out servers when Heroku is down and your business stopped.

I strip it down to a bare minimum. Some people probably don't realize that you can have a full-featured git-push deployment including a PostgreSQL database and Redis on few hundred lines of simple Bash code. The only exception to keepi

While I am happy for the progress people make in bringing databases to container orchestrators, I don't see myself going off the dedicated virtual machine for the database. I find it easier/safer to run it this way. Shameless plug

This is something along the line what I say in the Scaling chapter in my book[0]. If your infra is really simple (like a server or two), you can actually recreate it in a different provider and beat any hard to fix issue (whole AWS region g

I completely agree with you. And if you want backend engineers to know more about ops, sure. But let them learn the groundwork, not forced them into K8s. As for data scientists needing K8s knowledge, that's ridiculous to me.

You can have more servers and you route the client to the server that made the initial connection. Same as with any other web socket.
