Outlook used the (still uses? dunno) Wingding font to display smiley faces. To be able to copy paste that would mean copying the formatting as well. Not sure if that's the original reason for it, but it's definitely a use of this.

As someone with a lot of Flutter experience, I can second this. It usually works pretty reliably until someday you upgrade and cocoapods keeps complaining even when you clean everything and rebuild.

Without a doubt, CitC/Piper/Blaze/Critique/Code Search is what I miss the most from Google. As you've said it really feels like a complete system. I'd pay decent money for a hosted version of it.
