FYI you can disable all the fluff notifications in the iOS app at least. settings > username > notifications. I left just the comment replies on and turned everything else off.

Seems like an awful lot of armchair psychology you're doing here.

Fair enough point. I would argue that you can't really take issue with calling it a subsidy unless you're willing to take issue with the unpriced externalities. If a government refuses to price them in it's effectively the sa

I didn't read the linked IMF paper but the summary seems to directly support the claim: >The largest subsidizers in 2015 were China ($1.4 trillion), United States ($649 billion), Russia ($551 billion), European Union ($289 billion),

I find it very hard to believe they don't promote content intended to elicit an emotional response to drive engagement in China the same way they do everywhere else.

This all very true but I just wanted to add one more thing I think is a strength of parliaments. In a parliament majority, the buck stops with the Prime Minister and win or lose his performance is on the line in the next election. There&#x

Debian is nice if you don't mind the glacial pace of updates -i.e. you're running a server. After using Arch I don't think I can give up rolling releases.

Any modern pipe connecting consumers to producers is going to rely on some sort of matching algorithm to map the two. If they just used some sort of dumb FIFO -- user retention and advertising dollars would disappear. Like it or not, there

There's a girl in shorts standing around behind the police -- you're going to tell me she's an officer? They are just trying to get the camera crew out of there.

OK, but why is there so much Constitution/Founding Father worship in America? It's a flawed document that has lead to a flawed nation. It does not have Messiah-like abilities to deal with current problems so why be surprised it d

This is a tired argument. As terrible and kneejerk as/r/politics may be, it doesn't need to be some neutral ground of perfect arbitration for many reasons, the least of which is that it would be asking an insane amount of wor

I don't think this is a very strong point. In this case we're talking about a Reddit user who has been an active redditor for a long time moderating various subreddits. What's the issue exactly? That he may sell his accoun

I find it crazy people care about this. A guys takes over some subreddits... unless you're a Reddit admin who cares? There's so much content on the web just avoid the stuff you don't like.

Your logic does not follow. There are certainly less cheaters than if there were no anti-cheat methods. To use OP's example, an open source urine testing procedure would be trivial to game. The same thing goes for open-source multipl

Just my opinion, but the United States' aversion to any sort of collective nationhood or individual sacrifice is going to be its undoing. The problems we are facing are getting more complex and require greater co-operation, not less.

OK that's true but I think my point still stands. Someone who is doing very heavy scientific computation with long-run times will still prefer a release build that is optimizing for run-time speedup over compile-time speedup, within r

The argument is simple IMO: * release target build times aren't an issue. They can be done overnight and aren't part of the work cycle. * un-optimized build times are part of the work cycle and should be as speedy as possible.
