Can you elaborate on this or provide some examples? As far as I've seen, the only time facebook hasn't stuck to precisely to users' privacy settings are straight-up bugs, that have been immediately fixed.

Agreed. If everybody in your immediate proximity is already intimately familiar with your site, http://www.usertesting.com is great for this. (I'm not affiliated with them other than being a happy customer.)

To continue along the same analogy: the entrepreneur doesn't need to know about water, they just need to know what a good beanstalk looks like. That's my problem with "I'm the magic water" software developers. I can work out how to pay them

Diving with nitrox (nitrogen/oxygen) beyond 500 feet is very rarely done, and HPNS isn't really an issue because the overwhelming narcotic effect of the nitrogen would be devastating (think 20 tequila shots in a row). HPNS seems to be cause

There are a lot of issues that would have to be resolved before diving with a liquid breathing solution would be practical. (Okay, it will never be practical, but maybe it could at least not kill you.) * Liquid breathing solutions have to b

I think the author is kind of missing the point, having not used Foursquare himself. I think you could remove the "broadcast my position to friends" feature and it would still be useful/fun. It's still cool to become the mayor of the corner

I'm a staunch atheist, but when I read this article, my first reaction was that apple overstepped their bounds here. Then I read the text of the Manhattan Declaration. Sure enough, there is decidedly very anti-gay marriage and anti-choice l

Sure, I totally agree. But going the other way is much less practical/pleasant. hg-git is one of the things Github has going for it.

Github wants to price discriminate between serious users who can afford to pay more, and casual users. Projects with a high development budget (e.g. complex software projects) don't necessarily use more disk space than someone's personal we

HN does a great job of extolling the virtues of working at a startup, so I won't bother going into that. However, I graduated 3.5 years ago, and I sometimes regret not starting my 'career' at a large corporation for a few reasons: 1. I thin

Virtually every consumer-facing web startup needs new users. Getting them isn't a core value-add, or at least, it shouldn't be.

The latency difference between an HTTP req for a 2.3K script and a 500 byte script is pretty trivial. And if you're concatenating with other js assets on your site, the incremental increase in size after minification/gzipping will probably

The ideas are obvious because people want them. Lots of people want a Craigslist alternative that doesn't have the shittiest search interface this side of 2004. Lots of people want a dating site with a 'market' that doesn't heavily heavily

Those are some pretty big assumptions. But, even if only 64 bits were used, that's still enough space for every human on earth to have 2.75 billion IPv6 addresses.

Actually, I think this sort of infrastructure software may be the one area where it's more important to have good pricing than good support, precisely because the usage scales so large. For example, take credit card processors: if a $50mil/
