It's not country wide in my experience. When I lived in CA with 4 kids in public school, my opinion was that they were total garbage, enough so I moved out of state. Where I am now, the public schools my kids go to are great.

My primary question would be what has changed since you were last working in the industry - whatever the answer is, it would need to convince me that you wouldn't leave after a year or two or would be likely to need another long break.

MS chooses H1B's specifically because they can abuse and exploit them, forcing long hours with the threat of deportation upon termination. Turning a blind eye to that kind of abuse of power only allows it to continue.

Here, here. To top it all off, the next generation of techies think the company that did this is one of the good ones and voluntarily use their software(VSCode?).

Me too. If someone always needs some activity/entertainment happening, that's just too high maintenance for me and I lose interest in spending time with them.

These companies need to be attacked/shamed from the eco angle. If they cared about the planet(we do, of course!), they would let as many people wfh as they could. They could have commercials showing all their happy employees wfh - pe

Seems business as usual. Senators wouldn't even return our phone calls. So we had to resort to hiring a lobbyist who they would answer the phone for. Anytime we'd have a call with the senators assistant, we'd have a call wit

It was my impression lobbyists usually write the bills themselves. I don't know if this is how it's always done, but my company recently worked with lobbyists and a senators assistant and the lobbyists wrote a paragraph that, onc

You live somewhere that requires a car and you have a car, so yeah, there's no association of car=freedom for you. That is for people who live in the same place as you but don't have a car. When they get one, it's 'ah,

No second chances on price gougers from me. They knew the ethics of that before they chose to do it. Maybe other manufacturers can learn something from their demise.

I've been in a role like this for many years in a small company. I doubt it would really work in a rigid FAANG environment with formalities like levels and performance reviews and all that - it would get too political and competitive.

Totally agree. Java shops don't have the memory safety issue Rust solves. Without that benefit, why bother switching? C++ and Java don't overlap much in the domains they're used in in my experience. Rust may totally replac

Equal outcomes is an evil goal which can only be ultimately achieved through forced labor. Much more humane to just provide equal opportunity to all and then let people decide for themselves what they want to do for a living.
