If you really want to do this I would just do it like we do it in academic labs. Prep the DNA yourself and send to Illumina who will do the sequencing and send you the raw data.

As a grad student I have an “official” lab notebook which sits on my lab bench and has all my technical details etc. I also have what I affectionately call my “real” lab notebook which is a stack of loose printer paper at my office desk, fu

Great comment. I would encourage all PhD students to bomb-proof their thesis topic and build it on as solid a foundation as possible. I chose perhaps a less flashy, relevant, and lucrative topic for this reason but I would rather finish tha

Certain experiments are not ethical nor possible to do in human subjects, so scientists rely on model systems to interrogate biological questions. It has become somewhat common for people to immediately dismiss scientific findings on the ba

There is a biological feedback loop that dictates how hungry you are via hormones such as ghrelin and leptin. My little brother is about 50lbs lighter than me at the same height and we have very different builds and all his attempts to bulk

In life sciences the qualifying exam is an oral exam where they can in theory ask you anything. In comparison with for example the physics qualifying exam which (as I’m told) is a traditional paper exam, just ridiculously difficult.
