This idea is very similar to Solomnoff induction, which is fine, but... what stops a more “powerful” entity designing a simulation from “counting backwards from infinity”? The crux of your argument seems to be that we can’t (currently) thin

I’m familiar with ARUCOs, but in my experience they tend to be somewhat finicky (Eg: mid-identified with a little bit of noise or unfavorable lighting), and accurate poses tend to require a lot more fiducial markers than might be considered

Noticed the same in Firefox+iOS. Clearing the cookies/cache fixed the problem. I presume Wired tries to limit readers to a few free articles per period.

That’s a good (and profound) question, not deserving of downvotes. It turns out that the simplified paradigmatic “scientific method” is a very bad caricature of what actually happens on the cutting edge when we’re pushing the boundaries of

No, the essence of my point is that the number of sigmas is meaningless when you have a systematic error — in either the experiment or the theoretical estimate — all that the sigmas tell you is that the two are mismatched. If a mistake coul

From what I hear, it’s all pretty nicely containerized/turnkey already. There are even several “meta apps” (Eg: Homelab OS, YUNoHost, etc) which are like the base layer on which many of these services are available as “applications” wh

Well, but “independent contractors” totally have that right! OTOH, if their behavior is regulated “for the overall health of the platform” that is starting to sound a lot like being employed with the company operating the platform. I wonder

That’s a good point — even in the more limited sense of security today , the null hypothesis to be compared against is a regularly updated system. I wonder if there are any viruses/exploits which are known (so that antivirus softwar

Here’s the essence of non-ergodicity: the “typical” result (technically the mode, but practically the median is acceptable) is very different from the “mean” result. The language of “time” -vs- “ensemble” averages is simply about whether to

Precisely; a multi-tree has a unique path between two nodes. On the same note, I wonder what is the relation between dags/multitrees and semilattices. They seem to be very similar concepts afaict.

Probably stems from the foundational misnomer of “artificial intelligence” (which glamorizes the algorithm) compared with, say “data-driven algorithms” which emphasizes both aspects suitably. AI might have been a passable term in the era of
