I’ve wondered this too. So far, all I can discern is that smartphones behave like a tasp, from Larry Niven’s scifi writings. A tasp is a device that stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain. This rapidly leads to addiction and enslavem

Generally, I agree with you. I don't care about what you don't care about. I like the way Apple implements things, I've mostly liked their privacy-protecting moves until this latest fiasco. But I'm not sure this is bad.

Passive heating and cooling is one of my favorite features of Earth Ships. I’m entirely enamored with the concept, but I don’t know how the climate impact of building these — better or worse than normal homes? You seem to make a lot of ceme

Never heard of Cookie AutoDelete, many thanks from me as well. What I really want is for all cookies to be deleted when the browser exits, except for the sites assigned to the containers I've created. I'll have to see if this is p

I can’t imagine why people might be discontent… All that’s really being asked of us is to give up all our productive years in service to people with no ethics, to make them richer. People who are more than happy to use you up and toss your

I do it, daily, for several years now. In fact, I’ve left the industry entirely as a result of what I personally view as a complete lack of ethics on the part of every tech company. You being defeated isn’t the same as being unable to live

The thing that gets me is this: I don’t want to train AI for free. If you’re going to train models using our input, then you need to distribute the results as public good and make no profit from it .

I once worked in an open office where testing and editing ringtones was the business. No sound studios, no headphones even! The straw that broke the camels back, for me, was Gilbert Gottfried’s ringtones. All day long for what seemed like e

It isn't voluntary when its the only game in town. My personal experience tells me the nature of work in the US is exploitative. Of course, experiences will vary, but I've never felt alone in this; on the contrary, in the Midwes

I agree with you 100% — the only solution I’ve found workable is limiting my use of the technology itself as much as possible.

Agreed, this is the struggle. Look at whats being asked here, its frankly absurd: How do we make our execs feel more comfortable ... How do we make it so easy that no exec has to worry ... Some of the corporations I've worked, the

It’s about status and control. The pandemic revealed many useless employees in the management layer. They’re trying to make the case they aren’t useless by asserting the need to return to the office where they can “practice their craft”.

I think its as simple as this: people are fed up with FAANG; it seems like Congress might actually get off their asses and do something, and a few people smell blood-in-the-water. You know, the sort of thing that could potentially kick off

This is the most important task required to fix education. Its so obvious and it’s never on the table, which tells me everything I need to know about “reformers”. Until this is done, most everything else it shuffling deck chairs.
