I work at Facebook on the mobile app ads team. Like a lot of other commenters here, I think the OP didn't run an mobile app install ad which is meant exactly for this scenario - which would show up only on mobile inside newsfeed. OP -

I suspect he thinks he should have figured out a way to do both and not make it into an explicit trade-off. In fact, I think the entire post is about how "having+eating the cake" is possible if you put some effort into it.

Sounds like some data cleanup issue. Definitely an outlier that should probably be ignored.

I came here expecting something stupid but this doc isn't completely unreasonable. From the perspective of warning newbies or my mother (say) about investing in bitcoin, it does a fair job. Or rather, it could have been far, far worse.

When I was at Microsoft, I actually remember Bill talking about how he's a hard person to buy gifts for. I think he said (I could be misremembering this) that he doesn't watch certain TV shows he really enjoys because he wants to

Agreed - this is pragmatic advice. It definitely works on an individual level. But if this is something acceptable to go work on yourself, from the other side of the table, does it automatically become ok to judge people on? There's a

I think some of the folks here are casting aspersions on the folks arguing with PG - there are some reasonable arguments in there. PG's stance (my interpretation) is - (1) Founders need to sell to be effective and (2) Having a strong a

As someone who spent five years working at MSFT under Steve as CEO, my first reaction is sadness. Steve spent over three decades working there, it is an end of an exceptional career, regardless of how his run as CEO might have been.

I have questions about the OP's motivation for writing this but more on that later. The real fault lies with both parties for not setting expectations. A lot of the requests from the founders seem very reasonable; I fully expect them t

If you read the original Vanity Fair piece, Lewis assembles a true 'jury' of his peers - that's the best part of the piece.

I was just about to get on this thread and post about how reasonable and measured his response was. Your comment is one of the better ones I've read on this whole topic.

This is sad because this is the opposite of my pre-Microsoft TechEd experience. When I was in school, I got asked to do a demo for a Senior VP's keynote at TechEd to demo how a student would use Visual Studio. My parents happened to be

I really doubt that Rowling was doing this for the revenue. She seemed to genuinely want to just write under a different name/genre without any of the craziness that comes with a Rowling book launch.

Agreed - I don't think any of these should be used in isolation. But Kevin Systrom would tell you that recruiting photographers and influencers helped with launch because when that TC piece hit, everyone saw influencers/early adop

How do you measure that difference or, rather, how do you challenge the founder, who is arguably the best person to measure that? I've seen several founders attribute success to some critical piece of launch PR (often a big publication

Immediate response - he admitted it was a mistake. Long term - I didn't stay to find out. I doubt anything changed, since this is so deeply engraved in company culture.

I can think of quite a few startups that used a big bang launch with press with success. Off the top of my head - Instagram (MG's series of pieces on Techcrunch), Mailbox, Flipboard, Square, Path. I get where PG is coming from but pres

I've seen this promoted in subtle ways. At Microsoft, I once saw a VP talk about how a team had worked nights and weekends to make something extraordinary happen and how he was surprised to get emails from them in the middle of the nig

I'm pretty sure there's no data to back up that assertion. MSFT takes the dashboard UX very seriously and it is very data driven. If you see content there, it is because people want to see it and use it. I'm also not sure the Xbox One is a
