The first digital computers were used by banks within years of each other - 1955 for BoA in the USA, 1958 for BNP in France and 1959 for Barclays in the UK. And those machines merely took over from existing calculating systems that had been

I spent a few years implementing a real-time stock-charting applet with historical data, dozens of customisable indicators, drawing tools, multiple stocks at once... all using glorious Java 1.1.8 or whatever it was the MS JVM supported. I d

There's XSL:FO which allows you to transform XML into PDF documents, and you would not want to be writing that every time you wanted to add some basic styling to a webpage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XSL_Formatt

Isn't Perth the city that's farthest away from any other city in the world? Obviously that depends on the criteria which I can't remember, but the people I know from there have all complained that if you're bored of the

Yeah, I would say that algorithmic curation is the key difference between "before" and "after" here. Social media makes it easy to form filter bubbles, but on its own it's just an iterative change to an existing phe

HN for me is far too convinced of its own rationality and the rationality of others, leading to arguments based on weird idealised versions of human behaviour at odds with the real world. It could do with being a lot more empirical to be ho

More that nobody buys any USDT with $ at all, and then Tether announces that there are two billion new USDT, which are then used to buy BTC. The trick is that lots of exchanges don't have any way to convert from crypto to real currency
