A property tax is a wealth tax yes, and as you say it would be unconstitutional at the federal level, but they're enacted at the state or municipal level which is legal. At least that's the obvious position and the fact that the f

A shortage of bullion in Europe during the 15th century caused problems everywhere. That was followed by a huge influx of gold from the Americas in the 16th century, which also caused massive problems across the continent! https:/

That's definitely better for the share price, but what does the government do with those shares? Again it's paper wealth apart from maybe some small amount of dividends generated. And having the US Government "seizing the mea

A wealth tax wouldn't seize assets, but given that Musk's "wealth" is almost entirely his shares in Tesla, SpaceX, etc., how would he pay a 5% tax on his total wealth without liquidating a bunch of Tesla shares? His phys

This is exactly my journey with tooling. I still customise my environment more than the vast majority of people - and write user scripts and styles for websites I use heavily - but I don't need or want to have every single thing exactl

Yep, that is an accurate summary of every thread I've read on software developers and unions since I first joined Slashdot in 2000. The only thing missing might be "better and whiter" lol.

Could be Facebook as I think production releases are always rolled out in phases e.g. first to 10 users, then 100, then 1000 and so on. That means there's much less chance of even the worst mistake having a serious effect.

Because one of the key parts of UK law is the principle of parliamentary sovereignty - that parliament is the ultimate source of legal authority. The court cannot overrule parliament by definition, in the same way SCOTUS cannot overrule the

I get that regularly when someone quotes a tweet by someone that has blocked them since - if I click on the quoted tweet I can then see it as I'm not blocked. Could be related in some way.

A democracy founded on the notion that all white male property owners were equal and slavery was acceptable? Some fancy words in a fancy document doesn't override the actual reality of who was considered equal or not.

Bismarck did create the first public health system back then and the model is called the Bismarck Model. The NHS is nothing like that though and is based on what's called the Beveridge Model after the man who proposed it: https:/

This site has both a lot of the sort of people who "don't see race" and use that to downplay social issues, and people who (irrationally) insist in the primacy of rational thought and view speech as a consequence-free action.

I upgraded my Atari STE to a whopping 1Mb of memory in order to play the first Civ. It's a toss-up between that and Civ IV as to which version I spent the most time on. Civ III was the only one that disappointed me.

Cat bites are the strongest of any animal in terms of PSI because their teeth are so sharp, and they're ambush predators that kill with a single bite. I would totally go to hospital after a full-on bite from our cat.
