I really like the Ron Hogan translation. It's lighter on the woo and, y'know, connects. https://terebess.hu/english/tao/ron.html

Let's see how it runs with a decade's worth of water under the bridge. A lot of norms have changed since then. Still gives me the creeps.

It must be stressful being told you belong in prison, I hope you're doing OK. FWIW, I think you -- and anyone else who collects, organises and makes this sort of stuff available -- are doing God's work. Archivists are heroes. It&#

As others have mentioned in the thread, Prophet has been abandoned, and in my experience anyway, wasn't all that great.

I used to break into music festivals as a kid. The best time was just as camera phones were being adopted. I had a paying friend already on site, and got him to send me a picture of the wristband. Sky blue, yellow toggle. I head to a haberd

I mean, I'm also a poor lost soul here, but HG Wells was right: The passion for playing chess is one of the most unaccountable in the world. It slaps the theory of natural selection in the face. It is the most absorbing of occupations

I'm getting down-voted, so I feel I should fight my corner a little bit. Yes, their products are ubiquitous, but as someone further down noted, some of the most important aren't monetised. Their ubiquity also came from their first

Whilst I generally agree with the consensus in this thread that they're trying to starve competitors of cash, I'm not particularly bullish about Meta's future. They've sunk an obscene amount of cash into a failed product

I'm also on the Copilot Chat trial and I agree it's pretty weak at the moment. Good for asking random programming (or even general computer) questions, but lousy at understanding and working with my code -- which is basically what

IIRC there was some issue with non-Latin characters in filenames in zips on older Windows. The details escape me, but I live somewhere with a non-Latin script and it rars were very popular here ten-fifteen years ago for this reason.

As someone who just this week tried to put Linux on a Surface (laptop 4), I can categorically say I'm not going to try that again. Totally broken, not even booting properly.

I did not like the look of Kiwi Browser one bit, lots of weird permissions and dodgy ad-tech smells. Plus it's not Firefox, I'd rather use the same browser on both desktop and Android. This is great news. Can't wait to have a

I'm in the desktop calculator crowd. There's a shortcut in the exact top right of my keyboard, just over the numpad. It'd be rude not to.

I was kinda hoping the article was about how terrible a user interface chat is. All the implementations I've seen so far fall into one of two categories: deterministic or non-deterministic. The deterministic ones (e.g. that comically b

Are you on the Copilot Chat[0] preview? It's ChatGPT in VSCode, and it's nice. Not quite ChatGPT-level quality, but good enough. [0] https://docs.github.com/en/copilot/github-copilot-chat/using...

I've been using Copilot and Copilot chat for a while now, and I really struggle to see why I should use any of these ChatGPT wrappers over it. I know some support local inference with open models, but they're just not that good in

I honestly feel that Google and increasingly LLMs are the challenge here. Behaviour of users on SO has always been, well, as all the complaints here suggest. It's never really bothered me that the top answer's someone going off on
