Not in SV, but so happy my NYC startup has never asked me work outside of 10-6. Good startups exist!

I've never seen a SPA last "years" without some eventual rewrite or major change. The only sites I see last year are serveres rendered ones or very simple ones.

Here in NYC I have yet to see a job posting asking about Vue. It's all either React or maintaining an older Angular app.

Not the biggest JS fan but this is ill-informed and poorly written. Sounds about right for tech blog posts at least.

Meh, chores should be just part of regular home life. Everyone should clean their dishes or whatever without any financial incentive.

I've been in the industry for a little while and none of my senior or experienced coworkers have impressive profiles or open source contributions. Unless you're junior, it's really not that big a deal compared to your actual

I can see not wanting to go outside but not even seeing a mailman (was going to suggest grocery delivering)? Not sure there's anything you can do - even remote working requires some interaction with people.

The amount of people who will actually do this and go through it is so tiny that this comment is worthless. Give and take a few years (and perhaps not in SF/NYC), you could say this about any decent paying job.

99% of developers don't read HN or care about new languages. Ok maybe 90% :-)

There is a better way - put it in your calendar or something. Not a problem that needs technology.

Far, far too late for that here in HN :-)

Despite what HN may say, remote working is still fairly rare and highly competitive. Managers will want to see butts in seats for a long time.

2D ages better too. So many PSOne/N64 games have aged badly in terms of looks (especially now with HDTVs) but SNES and sprite-based PSOne games still hold up.

Same. I always think these people come from a planet where JS is the only language and SPAs are actually good and fun to use.

It's just the name I give to languages or tools that get big online and generate a lot blog posts and shoddy learning material. Though most of the time it does start with HN. BTW I love Elixir and I'm happy to see it grow. Nothing

It's got HN hype and a lot of the negatives that come with that (awful learning materials by people who haven't used it in production) and a decent amount of real world use though nothing major for now.

Typical "RIP older tech, long live new trendy tech" blog posts designed to get beginner experts hyped about something they'll probably never use.

Might be a cultural thing? I have friends that have your point of view, and others where every meal out is a communal experience (everyone chips in, but everyone can eat every dish) even if the restaurant is not set up that way.

With a non junior tech salary you can have a half hour commute and get your own apartment. It's not bad unless you want to live 15 mins from your job. I've done more than fine here with $80k and $100k, but maybe I have a cheaper l

NYC? It's not as expensive as people say, especially if you have a tech salary (which is about twice the median household income). If you have a family I think that changes things, though.

The worst part about this is that it makes people (at work or in side projects) use these and other frameworks for every project ever for the resume padding. Doesn't matter if it's a CRUD app that just needs a form - it has to be

Different companies have different cultures. The <2 year old startup I work for has 8 hour workdays and people commonly take 30-60 minute lunches if they want. No one cares as long as you are productive and get your stuff done. I get the

As much as HN loves to hate on Facebook, it has its uses. I can't imagine it not hurting OP's chances at meeting new people.

Your comment is baffling to me! The vast majority of people get their coffee and leave - at most they stay for a few minutes. They're paying to not make coffee themselves. A lot of people get drinks they can't easily make at home

It depends on the company and the culture. Here I usually take 30-45 mins to eat my lunch brought from home + talk to other people eating lunch. Some go out and take a full hour. A lot of non-developers, interestingly enough, always eat foo

Exercise and fitness in general has worked for a while. I know 75 year olds that have exercised their whole lives and others who haven't - completely different. Sure, it's not guaranteed but I think we can all agree that it's
