Also zip (postal code) information is not in the public domain in the UK. It is a commercial database which you can licence from the RoyalMail or probably a reseller.

This is so true - for the past 5 years I've been working on web apps, but this year most of my time was spent working on a java server / client with the client being a web start applet. It has been so pleasurable to not have to worry about
