I don't understand. If you think a fully owned subsidiary can have a "basically ceremonial" to the parent foundation, then what kind of relationship would be "not ceremonial"? For what it's worth, Firefox is al

If Google doesn't renew the deal, someone else will. There are multiple companies who would happily take it.

Thunderbird is maintained by a company that is fully owned by the Mozilla Foundation. How is that "ceremonial"?

None of this holds any water. Google does not control Mozilla. There are other companies who would happily pay more than Google, and for a few years Yahoo did. Mozilla is constantly stepping on Google's toes, in many different ways, an

Isn't this "cat" as a static site generator target than "make"? Make is just the build system invoking the static site generator.

Average total comp for an FAANG engineer in the US is more like $450k, and last time I heard numbers, Chrome and adjacent teams were more like 4,000 people.

The Quantum update was an update to the Desktop version of Firefox that happened in 2017. Mozilla did not remove access to any mobile add-ons at that time. You probably mean the Firefox Daylight release that happened in August 2020. Firefox

No, installing a package with apt is not more likely to screw up your machine than installing it manually. Moreover, you seem to be completely fine using the apt-installed CPython, while you think PyPy needs to be installed manually.

Google does not control Mozilla. For a few years, Mozilla had a contract with Yahoo as the default search engine, but switched back to Google for complicated reasons. In any case, Google isn't the only option for Mozilla, and there are

This, I think, is the core issue of this thread. It's totally not reasonable to expect anything from people who were kind enough to put their code on the internet for free for others to use. The requester is using the code someone gift

This makes the assumption that the only characters in the string are "s" and "p". There is no basis for this assumption. I think this code solves a different problem rather than being an optimisation of the original code

The thing is, nothing is developed in a different direction here. The fork simply merges upstream changes, and has no current plans of revert introducing any technical differences. It's a spoon, not a fork. I think it's an importa

Once the app is updated, you will be asked at the next app start. You can either choose a Google account to sync your TOTP secrets to, or you can continue without a Google account, in which case your secrets won't be synced.

Inflation (in general, not food inflation specifically) in the UK is worse than in, say, Germany and France. The reasons for that are specific to the UK, and they do include Brexit. I think it's not myopic to point that out. We shouldn

They explained how to trick HP laptops with hard-coded EFI paths into booting Ubuntu anyway. This will overwrite the Windows EFI, so only try this at home if you know what you are doing.

That's only true for the computer boards. The Pico never had supply issues. And apparently, computer boards will also be back in stock starting from Q2.

Wikipedia claims that Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft is the proper name of a company that only existed until 1991, so the new rules that were introduced in 1996 do not apply. The company never changed its name to the new spelling, so the

Why should a software licence only apply after "launch"? From what I can tell, "Truth Social" is violating the AGPL if they don't hand over the source code within a thirty-day period after the request from Mastodon.

Even if we assume the numbers in the paper are correct, saving 57 children in a single year is a lot. I have a hard time weighing this against the minor inconvenience caused by the laws to require car seats.

The important property of a dedicated packaging fee is that it scales with the actual disposal costs, and thus creates incentives to use less packaging or packaging that is easier to dispose of. A flat tax like VAT doesn't change incen
