"Kitchen Sink" engines like Unreal and Unity come with their own set of assumptions which may or may not help to deliver a given game. If you want to make a game which is radically different than the industry standard, you'r

Python and JS are top programming languages for very specific reasons. Python because: 1. It has a low barrier of entry for non-programmers, which makes it suited for applications like data science and ML. 2. There is vast library support

Won't this still result in a lot of fragmentation? I.e. won't you have disjoint allocations for those new branches of the tree? Sounds pretty cache-unfriendly.

I just disagree that performance isn't a concern in almost every context. There's a hierarchy of concerns, to be sure, and if you haven't written reliable code which solves the problem yet you shouldn't be worried about

Data duplication is a tool which can be used to avoid large classes of bugs, but there's no question it comes at a cost to performance. If anything, I would say explicit mutability allows us to decrease data duplication. By being expl

Yeah I totally agree. I think writing code which is "functional where possible" is super powerful and offers a ton of advantages. Trying to cover that last 20% of cases where you have to bend over backwards to create a performan

Imo functional programming is one of those things that makes sense from a theoretical perspective, but comes with compromises when it comes to reality. The thing about functional programming is that the confidence you get from immutability

Couldn't you theoretically have a version of DXVK which would just not support geometry shaders, or emulate them (maybe with a performance penalty) in a compute shader? It might not support every game, but proton isn't 100% either

I'm not convinced Rust would ever be the right "everything language". Currently I find myself reaching for it for almost every domain, largely thanks to the ADT's and amazing tooling, but it's a bit low level and so

It's also just a matter of the massive amount of prior art available on the JS side. There's so much you would have to create from scratch in Rust which is already an npm package.

I think they really failed to deliver on the core promise of Stadia: making games a part of the internet the way YouTube videos are. If they really made it the case that AAA gaming was just another type of content you might bump into in a p
