Great idea, but incomplete. I think you need to take the logical next step that those that aren’t valuable in terms of earning power should be executed en mass to make commutes of the wealthy more enjoyable. How many people clogging up 101

This is a Y Combinator forum, don’t give them ideas, I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody is already shopping out that pitch deck and Sam A is opening his checkbook.

“it’s no secret, we are jacking up the prices. It’s what we do for a living.” And as with many other ways to make a living at the expense of society - such as fraud, theft, and abuse - it should be illegal.

California is even more screwed up with property tax laws which essentially subsidize boomers (who have property taxes locked in based on the value of a home purchased in the 1980s!) to the detriment of anybody buying their first home (who

The company is run by an accountant (Ruth, technically CFO but shadow CEO). All decisions are accounting now, there is no deeper logic.

As parent of a 7 year old…you’ll figure it out. We try to avoid an “abstinence only” approach to tech (which doesn’t work once the kid goes to school or a friends house), and be very deliberate about what is allowed and not allowed. You’ll

No, this is very different. Google will link you to the NYT, you read there, and see ads. If GPT eats the web and pay walls it, they are 100% free riding. Now, I also think the Google model is proven at this point to be a bad model since th

Of course, that is partially my point: if OpenAI et al wants to make the argument anything online is fair game, then they should release the weights. If not, they have no leg to stand on.

On the other hand, the systems are trained on “free” data so it kinda should be public property by default. Claiming it’s fair use to suck up the entire web and pay wall the derived result is absurd argument. We all created the lifeblood of

I love how they are using internal AI tools as a means to lay-off huge numbers of people, but won’t make that particular image. “AI Safety” is a farce.

My personal favorite Bard failure mode is when I need help with Google Cloud and Bard has no idea what to do but GPT tells me *exactly* what I need. If you can’t even support your own products…I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with this

I’m bootstrapping a startup, so it ends up being cost effective. I also think the long-term outcome is open models will win, so I’m betting on that future while also maintaining OpenAI compatibility in the present.

It’s unpredictable, usually it behaves but on arbitrary web text you’ll eventually trigger a “safety” barrier, and sometimes just trying again will work.

Another factor is they monkey around with GPT constantly. The GPT you get on Monday may be totally weird on Friday. Whereas for a local model it doesn’t change unless YOU change it.

You can buy a good GPU and quickly come below cost for GPT APIs depending on your workload. I’m doing millions of tasks, so eating $8k on a custom build for ML up front is a long term cost savings. Not least of all that every other month th

I’m doing document summarization and classification, and there’s a fair amount it won’t do for prudish reasons (eg sex, porn, etc). Llama2 is basically useless in that regard.

The definition of “best” has a lot of factors. Best general purpose LLM chat? I’d agree there, but there’s so much more to LLM than chat applications. For some tasks I’m working on, Mixtral is the “best” solution given it can be used local

The funny thing is the money doesn’t even go that far in Silicon Valley! You’d often be better off making less comp but living nearly anywhere else in the world. My theory is the real reason for the return to office mandates is to keep emp

Silicon Valley is fun that way - tons of smart people who’s eyes slowly shift out of focus and minds slip into a stupor when confronted with their participation in helping the most horrible people alive ruin the world.
