Chrome is spyware to begin with; they know if you’re a bot out of the gate. Captcha is redundant to the deeper spying Google does at this point. Likewise captcha is useless against multimodal LLM available to anybody, many of which can be r

Rational smart people would think so; but the group in charge at Google now just sees something that doesn’t have ads on it and kills it. They hit OSS hard in first round of layoffs. But as people who only understand money they give HF a pi

Google is terrified of open source AI and the only thing the people in charge understand is how to manipulate people with money, they lack other ideas or methods. So yeah, that would explain it.

The way this always works is the law says “X”, then various parties come up with self serving interpretations of what “X” means, if they don’t mutually align they may go to a judge to figure out who’s definition of “X” will prevail. It’s a

Eh, we know from the DoJ trial Google is already sending trucks full of cash down to Cupertino every day for search defaults. This may just add a little extra overhead on the next “protection” payment.

I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks. (Also, FWIW my revenue is diversified enough that I can weather some storms in one area or another.)

Therein lies the rub, but if you are turning a small, but real profit, and you then need a cash infusion you’ll retain far more control if you already have proved you can make money.

If you don’t maybe you shouldn't be starting a business in the first place. The number of “zero interest rate” business that’s still need to be culled is too damn high.

Bootstrapping a business with my savings to retain full control is both the wisest and hardest thing I’ve done. I don’t understand why people are so quick to start giving up control out of the gate for software companies. Servers are cheap,

Well in the Ai/ML era maybe “models or gtfo” is better. Training data is just common crawl for half these LMs.

Hey now, Google is going to use these technologies to fire their own employees to save costs for the next quarterly earnings call! Of course building products for actual users is no longer a “thing”, but think of the stock price.

Well, I do want to know more about how it works. Anything important I will teach myself, it’s just hard to justify the time investment during work hours when the robot does it. Which I think is also important: these tools save time, but wi

I do a lot of model tuning and I’m almost ashamed to say I tell GPT what performance I’m aiming for and have it generate the hyper parameters (as in just literally give me a code block). Then I see what works, tell GPT, and try again. I’m d

I’m old enough to have learned that the secret to success is much less knowing the tool of the moment than picking the right tool for a job. The right tool may in fact be the new one, and LLM do open a lot of doors with zero shot capabiliti

I’m aware, I left the academic world in no small part that I refused to write papers that weren’t worth reading. A high quality, but short, CV is a career ender these days. I’m happier now though!

Nothing would benefit the scientific enterprise more than explicitly publishing papers about failed experiments. How much public money, time, and careers have been wasted chasing something that is already known not to work?

Google played both sides and lost. They took a cut of all the SEO trash display ads, and all revenue from the search ads. It seemed like a great way to make endless cash, but they double dipped and ended up breaking the web by hyper incenti

This was borne out in lawsuits. The YouTube tech wasn’t better, GVideo was superior but disnt have the same buzz or content, it was the pirated content Google wanted. The emails are public record.
