> forced to shape your data to your queries This doesn't seem like an advantage to me at all. I'd like the system to be able to evolve regarding the sorts of queries that it answers to, and relational systems seem to be very good in th

I'm not sure what your argument really is here. Your very invocation of "the wave function" implies continuity in the evolution of the state vectors, described by the wave equation - it matters not that results of macroscopic measurements

I think the big drivers of music consumption must still depend on traditional media and corporations in a big way. Otherwise we'd have tech specialists hooking up directly with musicians and together they would have delivered the death blow

Well "he" is never plural but "they" is sometimes singular (like the logical "some"). Does the sentence: "I was talking to someone about this and they thought so and so." really sound weird to you? It doesn't to me. Also I wouldn't call

I'm in FDA and XP is currently the requirement for us. Anything newer takes a request for exemption which is a lot of paperwork that will quite possibly be denied.

I also don't understand the reluctance to use it. It's as versatile as "some" in logic/mathematics. And its already common usage: "If a person walks into a bar, and they order a drink..." - sounds fine to me. Maybe there are cases where

I thought by "efficient" they would mean "gets the same work done in fewer cycles", but it appears they only meant that it uses less power. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

You can also freely branch and merge between your own private branches, without making everybody else see these numerous branches polluting the file hierarchy of the central repo. More generally, I never liked how to cvs and subversion a br

Guys, both recent Windows and any unix-like OS support SEPARATE user accounts! I wouldn't trust anything less... EDIT: In Windows, just beware to edit the ACL for the private user folder so that no other users can read its contents. I was

I always thought Oracle's enforcement mechanism was to leave ORA-00600 (internal error) exceptions scattered in various code paths throughout the database. In which case you need to contact support for their workaround, and for the support

This episode illustrates the reason to keep important communications polite and well argued, you just never know who the eventual audience might be. I think the author expressed himself well enough that this shouldn't be too embarrassing.

If not understanding you is the worst that happens I'd say you're lucky, but watch out... My buddy and I have been resisting "quick changes" on projects that have a lot of technical debt for a number of years, and what has happened is that

Well not quite equivalent exactly - the second derivative could just touch zero and then go back whence it came :) That wouldn't be an inflection point I think, I'm not sure what you'd call that...

No it's where the second derivative changes sign. You can think of the first derivative as the motion, and the second derivative as the "force" that's driving the motion - the force is changing direction.

Yeah I think this gets at a core problem of some curse words - the problem with words like "fuck" is that in the mind of the speaker, when agitated or lazy or both, the word often seems like a useful substitute almost anyplace in a senten

Yeah, sleep disruption in the spring is a bad thing. Sleep disruption in general has been known to cause increased risk of accidents, I don't know if this has been specifically tied to DST or not. If so it wouldn't be exaggerating to say

Never said I was familiar with Lisp, I've written more things in AWK (years ago)though not much and I don't use either at all anymore. Like another poster mentioned, the lisp at least has recognizable functions, and an easy syntax structure

I thought the lisp version was actually a lot more readable than the awk version. I never really messed with awk much though.
