I agree. It's a huge loss. As an ex-atheist who previously believed in evolution and is now a young earth creationist, such conversations have the potential to be very interesting. Sadly, they end up with subtle (if you're lucky) or less su

Yep. I remember that when I saw the initial announcement (don't remember where), I grabbed my account name just incase I ever wanted to try the startup thing, trying to make sure that I could get my name rather than "some31337d00d_27".

Any conversation that mentions evolution triggers it. As for the old days, I don't recall it being an issue, but that could be because I have a bad memory or that previous work environments were hyper-sensitive about posting to websites (or

Threw the old socks away, but I have about a dozen pair of tan socks (all the same), a dozen pair of the same style in dark brown and half a dozen of black dress socks. I have zero desire to be stylish in the sock department, so this greatl

Mentioning religion is guaranteed downvotes, unless the thread is about depression or suicide. That's the reason that I am a 95% (or more) lurker rather than poster. I loved HN when it first came out, but the heavy anti-faith undercurrent i

Sorry. NoScript is having fits over your page, burping XSS warnings to the max. I'll pass for now.

I really don't want to convert to mobi, because it's a less expressive format. Are these epub readers downloadable without having to root the device? That would be worth considering.

You may not be right, but you can always be wrong with style! :-) I like your numbers. I hope you're right. Now, if Amazon would just add EPUB support to the Kindles, I'd buy that largescreen DX in a heartbeat.

The website is nicely designed and I like the look of it. Account creation seemed to go well. The scrolling up thing could get annoying quite quickly. Can that be made optional? Is there a way to not put an objective on the resume? I'm tryi

The Stainless Steel Rat series were a huge part of my teen years. I'll have to buy the entire set (I guess it's definitive now) and make sure my daughters read them. Rest in peace Mr. Harrison.

For an article about how wonderful a job that Oracle has done with Java, it seems to have spent most of it's space linking to articles about problems. And to top it all off, I couldn't find the link to the report that made all of these clai

Now that's funny. (and maybe scary? :-) I learned C (from the first edition of K&R) about 24 years ago. And had no one to help me, so I had to understand everything myself and debug my own rampant pointer issues. Eeek! That was a wild r

Started with computers 32 years ago at a school computer club where my physics teacher brought his own home computer in and taught a few of us to program in BASIC during a few lunch hours. Earning my living with computers for about 22 years

Doesn't Tex pre-date XML? If so, that would make it hard, even for Donald Knuth, to reuse a non-existent technology.

I work here in Madtown :-), but I'm not sure that I would describe it as a start-up hub. Sure, there's the university and that has lots of energy, but tech start-ups? I'm curious what you see that I don't. (Perhaps it's because I only work

I switched to Pinboard from Delicious about two months ago and I'm very happy. The Firefox plugin works and continues to work even with FF 10.

I agree that it could get tedious, but I'm compartmentalized (not OCD ;-) enough in how I do things, that it has worked well for me so far. Your XUL apps approach sounds interesting. Can you offer any pointers on what you do and how others

This is why, I find that getting up at the same time on the weekend as I do during the work week actually helps keep my sleep patterns somewhat regular. So, although the idea of an occasional Saturday morning sleep-in sounds good, in practi

It's always the worst time to buy technology hardware. Just go ahead and buy if you need something and don't look at the adverts for a few months so you don't kick yourself silly for not waiting for the all the shinier toys that come out im

I use it and like it. I like the way that it gets out of your way when using applications. I'm still getting used to some of the configuration aspects, but I don't spend that much time tinkering with setup, so all told it's a solid win for

It's not so much that I don't want to use a library, but more that I would be unable to use much of the core language for the processing and would have to do everything in/with the library and store my text in Unicode-aware holders rather t

More good points for both sides. This is not making it easier. I don't need speed as I'm doing offline processing and not worried about lambdas at this point. The unicode is important as I am looking to take Greek and Hebrew text and proces

The article seemed a little short for me, but then I am actively trying to select between Lua and TCL for some personal scripting projects. There are many fine features with each language and few downsides, so the selection process is hard.
