I have a pair of AMD Radeon 5700 Series cards (apparently released in 2009!), which seem more than up to the challenge. One thing to consider is that with 2 graphics cards, you needs at least a 550W power supply (I had a 500W power supply

You are quite right, it is a ridiculous metric that doesn't stand up to any scientific rigour. The article was just supposed to be a bit of fun about my personal experience with different monitor configurations. I thought that this mi

I think that I would prefer 2 landscape (one on top of each other) then 2 portraits on either side. The problem is in getting the mounts to make it all work properly. Also, HN seems to have dropped the "∝" symbol from the title!

The problem with succinct data structures (and wavelet trees especially, but also rank-select dictionaries) is that while they have excellent performance characteristics when you look at them from a theoretical perspective, they tend to per

Is it possible to move data around between languages / engines? E.g. would it be possible to run a query against Red Shift (step 1), then cleanse it in Python (step 2), run R scripts over the Python output (step 3) then dump the result

Not even sure that the number of ways that a genome can be mutated is even finite. Genomes can be mutated not just by the substitution of single base pairs, but also by introducing copies, through deletions, translocations and insertions.

No. Micro-array analysis (as opposed to the Exome sequencing they are starting to offer, which may be useful for BRCA diagnosis) focusses on frequently occurring single nucleotide polymorphisms (substitution of one base for another). The m

+1 for this! When I first started with golang I too was flailing around with deadlocks, but once you have spent a bit of time with it, it becomes obvious when you have messed up. I think that this is more of a lack of familiarity with the l

From the article: "This new threshold applies only to petitions created from this point forward and is not retroactively applied to ones that already exist." So the Ortiz petition will be unaffected.

Why would the DoJ require that MIT "sign off" on the plea deal? As this was a criminal matter, I thought it would have just been between the government and Aaron. Or does the DoJ have to get approval from victims before offering a plea dea

There are a huge number of genes which are known to be transcribed (as mRNA) and turned into proteins, but we have no real idea as to what these proteins actually looks like, or what their function may be, for example [1]. If we knew their
