Really? American culture, architecture, and infrastructure is pretty uniform. I've been to all those places except Bar Harbor and I'd agree maybe Taos/Northern NM stands out due to deep and influential indigenous history. But

Gotta go deeper and scan the bank transactions going through your phone. Why not just watch your screen and build a model of everything you do. It's a slippery slope ... of extrapolation.

Yeah, health coverage can be tricky. I'm unemployed ("on sabbatical") and bought my own plan through healthcare.gov for about $12/day.

This is straight out of Silicon Valley the show, when they're giddy to see their daily active users skyrocket, only to realize that it's become a pedophile haven and they're liable for billions of dollars in back fines.

Elon keeps warning the world about the impending hyperintelligent AI that will retool human economies, politics, and religions, yet year after year his cobbled-together AI fails at basic object detection.

Did I read that correctly, that Federighi claims you need to upload at least 30 pics of known child porn before the system alerts Apple? That’s so confusing. He came out to apologize and give peace of mind to the “casual users” of child por

Replying to my own question since I can’t edit anymore: it turns out “perceptual hashing,” which I didn’t know much about, has exactly this property, that small changes in the input result in small changes in the output.

To be fair to the article, it does extensively quote prominent people in this field. Some of the most scandalous content in that article, to my taste, is direct quotes from Ord and Bostrom.

I see a lot of people taking for granted the nearby existence of AI superintelligence that will save or destroy us. It seems these people take for granted multiple technological paradigm shifts that will level-up the AI in unforeseen ways:

One takeaway from the article, for me, is that some of the rhetoric of longermism by itself has dangerous potentials in society. For example it could be weaponized politically to marginalize groups.
